Hi everyone! I have a 6 year old who was recently diagnosed with ASD. So far we are doing speech therapy with a private SPL as well as through the school.
We are doing social thinking, the incredible flexible you. Seems very helpful so far. I have also been introduced to the world of social stories which help
Her with transitions a ton! Before the diagnosis I used to write down her day in list form, so I guess I have always known she needed that.
So far this year with school we have had one issue. She is very rigid with rules. Well, her second day of school she walked into find the male custodian cleaning the girls washroom. She was very upset and it took the teacher awhile to calm her down. Now she seems to have a lot of anxiety about seeing the custodian and his cleaning cart around the bathroom. I wrote a social story out for her to keep in her backpack about what to do if he is cleaning when she needs to use it. Fingers crossed, it seems to have helped.
I am happy I have answers but have struggled a bit with telling people she is autistic. I'm sure any parent can relate lol. It's nice to have this board!
