Anovulatory Bleeding

Hello ladies, you're gonna have to bear with me on this one. I could use some feedback.....I am at a loss right now as to what might be going on with my hormones. My cycle is all scrued up and it is incredibly frustrating because i have no clue what my body's doing. Last month i had some mid cycle bleeding which lasted a while and it happened right around the time i expected to O. My body clearly geared up for it, i had all the signs but then never did. Instead i just bled for days. Now it has been weeks and STILL waiting for ovulation although it seems questionable whether i will or not anytime in the near future. So anyway i went to see my gyno since i was concerned and she called it another period, even though i'd had one 3 weeks prior and failed to ovulate in between. She said it was likely an "estrogen breakthrough bleed. Also i got an ultrasound and several small follicles were seen in my ovary. Does this mean i should expect to be ovulating soon?? If anyone could shed any light and clear up some of this confusion i would feel a whole lot better! Thank you in advance :)

  • I don't know too much about your situation, but hope you get some good answers from the ladies here! :)

  • Sorry you are feeling confused. A 21 day cycle could possibly be ovulatory or not. The only way to know is through temping. If you bled for days and days and you were able to fill a pad or tampon, that is most likely your period and not spotting.
To know whether the ultrasound shows whether you will ovulating soon, you have to know exactly how big the follicles are. But if your doc said they were small, then I'd say you are not ovulating soon. I really really recommend you buy a book called taking charge of your fertility. All will become clear. Order it now! :)

  • Have you recently come off of birth control?

I quit Depo in September of last year and I have been bleeding every other week since then without ovulating. I found out (from my regular OB) that this is normal for Depo and that it can take up to a year for Depo to leave your system. Different forms of birth control work different ways to leave your system. Just a thought.

  • Already have the book, its like a godsend :)  And i do temp, that's how i know for sure i never ovulated. Sorry left that out, i should've known people wouldnt just assume i was charting my cycles. I also happen to have the follicle size now, picked up a copy of the ultrasound images and the measurements were there. The biggest one was 6 or 7 millimeters but that was last Monday. Any thoughts ?

  • Small follicles seen on ultrasound just means that you do have follicles, not that you are soon to ovulate. As your cycle progresses, you will have one follicle that enlarges to roughly two centimeters before rupturing- this is when you will have ovulated.

What CD were you when you had this ultrasound? If it was while you were still bleeding or immediately after, you wouldn't be expected to have a dominant follicle. If it was around or just prior to mid cycle, a dominant follicle should be seen if you are going to ovulate. If it was toward the end of your cycle, the follicle could have already ruptured, in which case some fluid might be seen near your ovaries and uterus.

  • Well that brings up another point, thats part of what im confused about...How do i know where to count cd1 from? The second bleeding episode wasn't a result of ovulation so therefore was not a true period. Would that still be considered the start of a new cycle, is it enough to reset things ??
  • I'm sure the book talks about this. Have you looked?

  •  Ok well in that case today is CD22 and the ultrasound took place on CD12 which would have only been a couple days after the spotting was done. You would think that 10 days later i would atleast be getting positive opks and/or have more CM...Shouldn't i be close to ready by now???
  • I'm not really sure how to link my chart but i can try...Is it through FF ?
  • And to answer that, no i wasn't taking BC i recently miscarried and thats why everything is so wonky

How long are your typical cycles?  Considering a "normal" 28 day cycle, you should have had a dominant follicle by CD12 when the ultrasound was done, and likely should have ovulated around CD14 (+/- a day or two). For someone like myself with a 22 day cycle, I had a dominant follicle by CD8 (probably earlier, that was just the day that I peeked), and I ovulated on CD11. I would say there is still hope for O if your regular cycles are on the longer side, but if you have an average or short cycle length I would guess that this cycle was anovulatory.

I hope I'm explaining myself clearly. It makes sense in my head but when I read it, it doesn't seem as clear.

ETA: I'm basing all of this off a "normal" cycle, assuming your hormones are behaving as they should. Of course, as PP have said, a miscarriage can cause great variance. Sorry for your loss.

  • I've got no answers for you, just wanted to say anovulatory cycles suck and I feel ya. Hope things look up for you soon!
  • Actually it does sort of make sense because i tend to have pretty long cycles. Anywhere from 35 to 42 days and i am a late ovulator so we'll see! I have been O'ing earlier though....closer to cd20 (Since i lost a pregnancy in July) But before that i wouldn't ever ovulate until atleast cd30..Maybe things are reverting back to the way they were pre-loss? Who knows
  • I have also been drinking green tea everyday, isn't that supposed to help with follicle development? Maybe its just taking longer because it is causing them to mature further ?
  • Oh, really? That's interesting, if anything it has dried me up. Does any type of green tea work or does it have to be a certain one ? i have the "to go" packets and its like a powder with lemon flavor
  • I've heard that can help, i drink plenty of water already. How much would it take to make a real difference?
