Fetal heartbeat question...

So I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had a hard time hearing their baby's heartbeat with the Doppler in the drs office at 14 wks. I'm 14 + 1 with baby #2 and at my appointment today we couldn't find the baby's heartbeat with the monitor. I was concerned because we could hear it from like 10 weeks with my son and this time we have yet to hear it. My midwife did a quick ultrasound and we saw the baby move and saw its heartbeat. She said everything looked good. I'm really just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if it has, if you know why? Thanks!!

Re: Fetal heartbeat question...

  • I'm 16 wks today and yesterday was the first time my OB could pick up the hb on Doppler. No reason, the baby must have been hiding. But one of my books said 16 wks is about the time you start hearing a hb, so as long as they saw everything was fine on the u/s, I wouldn't worry.

  • Do you have an anterior placenta? That could make it more difficult.

  • Mine comes and goes, or sometimes I can pick up one baby easily but not the other. They're getting to the point now where they're big enough that they move all over the place and still have lots of room to move. So you might not be able t catch it because they're moving like crazy! Also could be the position of your placenta. Don't stress!!
  • I'm sorry this must be stressful for you.

Could your doctor measure the heartbeat through the ultrasound? When I was having transvaginal ones at the RE office they could measure the heartbeat and we could hear it through the transvaginal thingy at like 7 weeks. Maybe you could ask them to do one of those so that it eases your mind a little?

  • I went for my second appt this past Monday and was 14 weeks on the dot and yes she had trouble finding it. When she did it was very faint, she said it was most likely because my placenta was in front. If you got to see your little one and his/her heartbeat I wouldn't worry too much :)
  • It's definitely hit or miss with the doppler. The Dr couldn't find it one appointment, and it came through clearly at the next. No need to worry as it just depends on the little ones position :)
  • I'm 15w and picking up HR is easy. Baby likes to be in the center with back pushed up against my belly, well at the last 2 appts that's where baby was.

  • They couldn't hear mine with the doppler at 12w and then could at 13w, but it took a while. It gets easier to find more consistantly the further along you get. Glad that you had a great ultrasound!

  • Thanks ladies! I think my real fear was that ninja baby (my son) was always easy to find from 10 or 11 weeks on! But knowing you've all had hard times too makes me feel so much better! We go for our anatomy scan in 5 weeks so we will just have to wait to hear it!
  • This is really common ... And after an ultrasound you should be completely reassured! :)
