Christmas cards and birth announcements?

I'm trying to think about whether we'll send Christmas cards this year and/or a birth announcement. I'm kind of thinking about just sending a birth announcement, but is that tacky? What are you doing? Photographers are starting to do Fall/Winter pictures, so I also don't know if I want to get pictures now for a Christmas card or just wait until we have DS in January and take family pictures then.

ETA: Should have said holiday cards to be more generic for Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, and other December/January holidays.

Re: Christmas cards and birth announcements?

  • I'm undecided. We have never sent out holiday cards but talk about it every year. That definitely wont happen this year. It's just not something I'm into spending time and money on before the baby is due. But we've talked about a birth announcement. I'm leaning towards doing one.

I do feel like this will be our last year with no holiday card....once we have a baby it's nice to send out the holiday cards!

  • We always do holiday cards but I never did a birth announcement with my daughter. Most family and friends are on FB so I just posted it on there. Although I wish Jack could make it into the Christmas card this year, its not going to happen but I'm not depriving everyone of their Christmas pic of Mackenzie :)
  • I don't think there's anything tacky about just a birth announcement. We haven't done Christmas cards ever. It just doesn't seem necessary to me.

Oh my gosh @emmyg65‌ that card is awesome! Your cat's face is everything.

This new one is due so close after christmas that I am going to combine them and send one out after the birth. I'm thinking a big pic of the new baby and one of DS holding the baby. I would just feel like an AW sending two out so close together. Plus, I'm cheap.

    Edited for clarity.

I'm still on the fence about Christmas cards because I know I'll never top our card from last year. We'll probably just do nice boxed cards, nothing personalized, in early December. And we're definitely doing birth announcements, most likely in mid-January. I love mail, so I'll take any excuse.

    Best. card. Ever.

Everyone else can pack it up be go home, Christmas/Holiday cards are shut down this year.

  • I would love to send both. Last year I didn't have my act together in time for Christmas cards, so I sent happy New Year's cards. If the same were to happen this year, we'll just send birth announcements. I have the best of intentions though.
  • I put birth announcement only, but really you could do any of the 3. Birth or Christmas, or both. We don't do Christmas cards every year so maybe that's why I don't feel bad saying just do what you want! :)
  • This is a little different because my son was born December 1, but we just did Christmas card/birth announcements that year.  I got photo cards printed at Walmart with something about "Christmas came early at our house!", his stats and a picture of him under our tree.  I have 75 people on my card list, so there is NO WAY I was sending separate Christmas cards and announcements.  I didn't do any announcements for #2 and actually haven't sent Christmas cards the past two years, oops!

  • i'll probably do both, just because that's what i do.  i'll send out the generic holiday card with all of our names and a copy of DS's school picture, and then i'll send out birth announcements probably a month or so after beanie gets here.

  • We will do our regular Hallmark/boxed Christmas cards to our full list then after we get our newborn photos, we'll do birth announcements to probably a little smaller portion of that list.

  • I'm sending both. I LOVE sending Christmas cards. But it's cheap for me since I design my own cards and take my own pics

  • We are only sending Christmas cards, no birth announcements. But we didn't send announcements with DD either. (They aren't common in my circle of family/friends)

If we were going to, I would do separate cards. But I'm also due toward the end of jan. If I were due closer to christmas, I might change my opinion and just send one.

  • We'll do both. We've moved a bunch and grew up on opposite coasts, so we have friends and family all over the world that we don't see over the holidays. Our holiday card list has gotten smaller over time, but we still like to do it. I'm not due until Jan 19, so we probably won't send a birth announcement until February.

  • I'm planning to do both. We're getting family/maternity pictures taken in November, so I'll try to do a personalized card with those pictures. Baby won't be here until the end of January, so we'll send out birth announcements sometime in February.

  • With our second (Born in February 2013) I mailed out the birth announcement WITH the Christmas card, in December of 2013, so his announcement came 10 months later! Oops! You do get super busy when there are two! With this one I plan to do a Happy New Year's card (in lieu of a Christmas card) and include a nice, separate birth announcement in the same envelope. I'm all about saving $$ with the same stamp  (and envelope for that matter).

  • What do you think is tacky about a birth announcement?
I hardly ever do holiday cards, so I'm sure this year won't be any different.  We will send a birth announcement after baby is born, but that probably won't be til February since I'm due min-January.
  • We (and as in "we" I mean me, DH has no clue this is what we're doing yet) are doing both. I am not having maternity pictures taken, so our holiday card (DH, myself, and our two dogs) will suffice as our family holiday card + a nice picture of my pregnant self. Since LO is due Jan 22, we will have newborn pictures taken after he's born and just send out one of those pictures announcing his birth to our family & friends and thanking them for their love and support.

  • I will hand-out Xmas/New Years cards on Christmas Eve to the extended family. We're getting family pictures taken in November which I will use to make personalized cards. I will mail birth announcements to family and friends after LO makes his debut. I think that birth announcements are fun, not tacky! :)

  • We are doing a combo holiday card/birth announcement. I didn't get holiday cards out until January last year anyways so it works out :-P

  • We sent these when we were expecting our daughter! Everyone loved them! Maybe we'll do something like this again and enclose a pic of our daughter and then send the announcement in Jan/Feb.

  • I didn't do birth announcement with E I won't be doing them this time either! We do Christmas cards every year. We got professional pictures taken for our reveal so those will be our cards.
  • With LO coming Dec 30, I'll send out Happy New Year cards with pictures if both kids. On the back I'll do a little "update" and include the little guys stats at birth.

  • We usually do Christmas cards and did an announcement with DD (they came with the package we got at the hospital), but she was a summer baby. This year I'm thinking we'll just do an announcement. We're having a photog come to our house to take pics so we'll pick one of those and use it for announcements with a family pic. DH loves sending Christmas cards though, so I may get vetoed on the no Christmas card this year idea.
