Pumping-Is this normal?

I have been lucky enough to need nothing more than a manual pump for the first 5 months BFing my daughter, mostly for comfort, short outings, etc. I am not trying to actually build a supply for time away, and while I knew it would take practice, I am very disappointed in my production so far. It all starts fine. I fel let down, then 3-5 good squirts, and then nothing. The supply simply stops, cold turkey. Any tips?

  • So, are you using an electric pump now? Make sure you're hitting the let down button if there is one, or adjust suction for faster and lighter for the first few minutes. Take some deep breaths and relax. Look at baby or pictures of baby. Use massage and compression while you pump. Make sure tubing and all parts are in good working order and replace membranes if they haven't been replaced in the last few months. Also, make sure you have a proper fitting flange. Pumping definitely takes a little practice.

  • How long do you pump for? It took some getting used to for me, but I get a let-down, a couple ounces of milk, then not much for 5-10 minutes, then another let-down and another ounce or two of milk. This happens about 3 times in 20 minute period. It used to always be 3 let-downs in 20 minutes, but now 2-3 because my supply experienced a baby-led decrease.
