Birthday Cake! (another birthday party thread)

Where are you all getting LO's 1st birthday cake from? Or are you baking it yourself? And what is your budget?

I contacted a bakery to get our cake done and she quoted me $45 for a 2 layer round cake that feeds 12-15 people and $3 per cake pop. They were cute and all but jeez! My budget WAS $50 but should I go up? What about grocery stores? Anyone know a grocery store that makes good custom cakes?

We're getting ours from Publix. Delicious cake (they did our reveal cake) and good prices, PLUS a free smash cake with purchase! FYI for all those with Publix access! We're doing a penguin theme so I need to get a quote for a penguin cake...

  • I'm a good Baker so I will be making a smash cake and cupcakes. I'm making all the food and treats. My thinking is this he has many b days to go and the first one should be special. Rather then spend hundreds of dollars I can make all the food for half and then spend the rest on clothes and toys for him.

It will be Publix for us, too.  Pretty much every birthday cake in our family comes from there.  Yum!

  • Well darn, I wish I lived near a Publix. I was thinking Giant or Wegmans. I know Wegmans has good cupcakes but don't know if they do custom decorated cakes (i.e. mickey mouse).

  • I was going to get the cake at our grocery store but a lady from church makes cakes and gives the friend discount. So I'm going to talk to her and see what the price will be. I'm hoping less then $50. DH might kill me if it's more.

Jack has a dairy allergy, so I'm making my own smash cake for him, and cupcakes for the guests.  Duncan Hines classic Yellow Cake is dairy free, so that's what he's getting.  They make a dairy free frosting, too, but I don't remember which one.

The cupcakes will be butter pecan flavored with butter cream frosting.  I made a trial batch last week and they were super nommy.

  • I'm making G's smash cake, both for 1 year pictures and for her party. We will more than likely be doing a BJ's cake. I wanted to get a fun cake from our local bakery, but it would cost us over $100 for a big enough cake.
  • I'm making a banana zucchini cake with cream cheese frosting for LO (with sprinkles for colour! ) and some mini cupcakes for her little baby friends. Adults get wine, or a cupcake if they want.

Soooo cute! For the smash cake don't do red. I did an Elmo cake for my niece and she was covered in red. My mom says it looks like blood. I know it's silly but she hates the pictures because of this.

Agreed! No Red! Maybe light blue or yellow?

ETA: I will be baking Olivia's smash cake and then cupcakes for guests. i LOVE to bake!

Thanks for the suggestions.. I think I will do blue or yellow. Now I'll go look for a "healthy" frosting recipe
  • I think I want to do a large cupcake for his smash cake and then similar looking cupcakes for guests to eat. Cupcakes are easy. Haven't talked to the bakery in town about it so I'm not sure on pricing. Everything she has in the shop is priced very well though.

    We are doing Publix too.
  • Planning to make a curious George cake along these lines, and either a mini-cake or smash cake with yellow frosting. Chocolate cake with banana filling, super yum!
