Can I get some UOs up in here?

edited October 2014 in Working Moms
I get annoyed when I see the whole paper-towel-on-the-faucet-and-the-door business. A phone is a lot germier than those surfaces. Yes, some bathrooms are too disgusting to breathe in, much less touch; but the standard, run-of-the-mill bathroom does not have anywhere near the germs one might imagine. I feel like there's a lot of fear-mongering on this issue that was kindled around the same time that hand sanitizer started showing up on shelves.

They should put paper towels next to the gas pump ;). My UO is I think using the handicapped button to open doors in & out of buildings is lazy if you don't actually have a physical reason to use them. (and yes I'm aware that I have no way of knowing that just by looking at someone. Just seems a lot of ppl do it. LOL).

I'm the worst offender with the handicapped button! I usually make the joke, "Here! Let me get the door for you," even though I know it's not funny at all.  L-)

  • I can't help but using the paper towel in the bathroom simply because I see too many people not wash their hands. I do know that other surfaces (including my keyboard) are just as germy and I do use sanitizing wipes/wash hands an obscene amount of times per day :))

My UO - the only things that should be pumpkin/pumpkin spice flavored are those made from actual pumpkins: pie, muffins, etc. PSL = yuck.

  • I'm not really sure why it matters to others how people open doors.  Life's too stressful as is to add meaningless annoyances.

I do agree though that the pumpkin spice spiral is out of control.  Trader Joes is the exception because they seem to have the spice to actual pumpkin ratio correct.
  • I do not care for casual Fridays, especially jeans.

I specifically mean an environment that is professional dress 4 days a week and jeans 1 day. It is too big of a leap and eventually creeps into more casual on other days and sloppy Fridays.

I also end up needing to buy additional clothes just for Fridays.

  • I think there are too many "---- Days." Yesterday my paralegal and admin brought cupcakes for Bosses Day. Then my paralegal was certain to point out that paralegals day was the day before and we missed it. Wtf is Paralegals Day? And wtf is Bosses Day?

@MarlaSinger& - I don't think I can be friends with you anymore. I love jeans day, but I work for an institution that views them as inherently evil, so we only get them every so often. And on those days, I am in heaven. I view it as a FREE way that my employer could be improving morale, so why not do it? Especially when it's STANDARD at all of our competitors.
I do get that aspect.  Ours only recently changed to allow them on Fridays (within the last year).  They did so for that reason- to be nice and say thank you.  But people show up in what I would rake leaves in and it's only getting worse.

ITA! There is also such a thing as Doctors' Day. I don't need a day.

That is how we are trained to wash our hands in healthcare. Yes, there is a correct way that has been validated in studies. I do it out of habit.

And that's where it's a manager's job to step up and let people know that they're going to ruin it for everyone. Our jeans days (when we actually get to have them!) are clearly defined. No holes, no distressing, no rips, no tears. They can't be paired with tennis shoes or hoodies. It is possible to maintain a professional appearance while wearing jeans.
Ours was basically- don't look like you are running errands or washing your car.  Way too subjective.

Because it is a waste of electricity and over time will wear out the equipment that opens & closes the door, leading to need for repairs and extra $ for the building owner, so that able bodied ppl dont have to pull a door open, that is why :) Life is too short for most of the things everyone vents on here..>I think my door opinion has more validity than not liking pumpkin spice...??? LOL!!!!
  • I tend not to care one whit what car seats other parents use, how long they rear-face, when they move their kid to a booster, if they use crib bumpers, if they have blinds with cords right next to their kid's crib, etc. but I do seem to be getting judgey on parents who let their kids play soccer, football, hockey and other concussion prone sports.  I also semi-judge how competitive kids sports seem to be.  There's no way my 8-year-old and I are traveling out of state to a sporting competition.  You're 8, not in the NFL.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

This is probably one of the more absurd explanations I've heard on here.. In that case, you probably shouldn't drive a car if you're able bodied enough to walk or ride a bike, because even though it's more convenient, driving a car uses roads which will eventually need repair and extra money for the state, which will increase everyone's taxes.. Also, make sure that when you finish microwaving something, if you stop it early to hit reset, so that it doesn't keep blinking that there are still 2 seconds left on the timer, since that uses more electricity and is just plain wasteful!

Your examples are not even comparable.

I guess the people who work at the university of toronto are absurd as well, but they had to create a special form for repairs b/c of all the able bodied people using them, apparently.

Oh and these people are absurd too:

"She said people know not to park in handicapped parking spaces. But, she said, many people routinely use the automatic handicapped door openers to access buildings without thinking that overuse stresses the mechanism and shortens its life span."

"However, the button mechanisms that open these doors break down often. The reason? Overuse by people who do not need assistance entering buildings."

“Every time an able-bodied person uses an automatic door when they don’t need it means that someone else might not be able to get to class or make it to work on time,” notes Patterson. “The overuse of door mechanisms means they won’t work for someone who may really need them.”

    Huh.

  • My UO is that people shouldn't judge other people's UOs. Lol. They already admitted the opinion in UNPOPULAR. DUH. And I sometimes hit the auto-door open bc I work in a Homeland Security sensitive building, so we have to push a button and then push almost every internal or external door open. So I often hit the button in another building, see the door start to swing open, and then say, "Oh, shit! I just did it again!" DH then laughs hysterically at me.

I totally agree with you.  I'll add to this with my UO.  I think it's unwise to put too big a focus on athletics at the detriment of academics in the middle school/high school years.  Most kids will never be good enough to make sports a career and even if they do, the span of that athletic career is limited.  Kids would be much better off viewing sports as a great hobby.  This coming from someone who sees our state fritter tax money away on building state-of-the-art football stadiums for high schools and not enriching the kids with arts or academics.

Pumpkin spice opinions are of the utmost importance.
  • I started soccer when I was 7. I stepped onto the field for the first game and took a ball straight to the face on the kickoff.  My nose bled and bled. I was able to continue playing once it stopped.

  • I have a UO that I thought was normal. I always press the button on doors that have them if I cannot avoid that door. The signs on some of the doors "please press button to open door" made me think that the awful mechanical sound and the resistance meant that opening the door manually caused damage to the mechanism.

I also hate that they still deliver a paper phone book.

Speaking of this being free, when I did work at a law firm they had rare jean days but only if you contributed 5 dollars (minimum contribution) to habitat for humanity the day before.

@somebabiesmom - I may have drawn eyebrows on DD when she wouldn't leave me alone while I was getting ready for a rare date night. DD thought it was hilarious. DH and the babysitter were not as amused.
Get the loreal makeup genius app, take pix of her and send them to people but don't tell them it is an app. It's freaking hilarious. :)

Too many people don't wash their hands so I don't want their pissy or shitty hands to be touching stuff and I come behind them.

FTR, I clean my work station daily, my keyboard and phone regularly. I don't like to get sick.

    Huh.

There are thousands of features in modern buildings that are there to make them more accessible, not just to the people with disabilities.  Do you not use the elevator?  How about let your kids use the low drinking fountain?  Never take your kids into the large restroom stall?

I use the buttons when my hands are full, if I'm pushing a cart or a stroller, or just know the door is a PITA to open otherwise because the stupid mechanism makes it harder to open!  I do sometimes give the side eye to able bodied people who take the elevator up/down ONE floor level... that seems lazy to me.

  • Wait using an elevator for one floor can be judged but pushing a button to open a door cannot? Lol. Of course ppl are going to use it w hands full or a stroller I am talking about an individual just walking with no reason to use the button. It is sort of funny how defensive ppl are about pushing the door button. Using a low fountain bc you can't reach a high one or using the big stall bc you have two kids w you has a reason and purpose. Please tell me the reason for pushing the button if you can otherwise open the door without a problem?

I always use the wheelchair button because those doors are fucking heavy if you try to open them by hand and I feel like an asshole getting a workout trying to open a damn door.  Not to mention the horrible noises they make.

Lol :) I think the manufacturers need to work on this... Or maybe not bc maybe they sell more if they break hmmm.
The one place it bugs me the most is the bathrooms in our building which do not have heavy doors just normal doors... Ppl wipe their hands on a paper towel but supposedly don't want to touch the door handle so they touch the auto open button?(it is not in a place where you could use your elbow or anything but your hand) This makes no sense I am sure the op would agree haha

Ha ha, fair enough!  Feel free to judge away when you see me being lazy. I think I'm mostly just arguing against the rational that you shouldn't use accessible building features just because they will wear out and break. Things wear out and need to be replaced, that's life.

It's kinda hypocritical to say it's alright to use these features when it's convenient for you and your kids, but not ok when other other people do the same thing out of convenience.
