Mason James Birth Story

We discovered Mason was transverse at about 32 weeks and despite our best efforts all he did by 37 was turn breech. We scheduled a version. 3 tries with lots of scratches and bruising on my belly and Mason continued to stay breech.

The doc wanted to give it another shot before we settled on a c-section especially since the last thing I wanted was to go under the knife.

I wanted to give our little boy as much time as possible to turn on his own so we picked October 7th (my due date) as D-Day for the next version attempt. If we were successful we would induce; if not we would go in for the cesarean. One way or another, he was coming out!

We arrived on the 7th at 9:30am only to find that the doctor I was supposed to have wasn't there - so we left and had to come back a couple of hours later. I had opted to get an epidural before they attempted the version just in case there were complications and we needed to be rushed in for an emergency c-section (I didn't want to risk being put under general anesthesia and "miss" the birth of my baby). I have a fear of needles and since I had no contraction pain to distract from the pain of the epidural insertion I was extra scared.

The epidural was working full force on my left side and I couldn't move my leg at all but I could still feel and move my right side easily. It eventually got somewhat tingly and we started the version. After 2 attempts baby boy hadn't moved. During the third try he started to roll but his heart rate suddenly dropped into the 60s. We were lucky and he made a quick recovery when we smoothed him back into his breech position. It was official... we were having a c-section.

I cried with DH but quickly accepted that this was best for Mason and once DH suited up we were off to the OR with bets placed on what time LO would be born.

Once the screen was up they were prodding at my belly to see how numb I was - I could still feel most everything on my right side. The anesthesiologist commented that I must be a true redhead since apparently most redheads require higher levels of anesthesia (who knew). They started their incision and brought in DH who worked wonders at keeping me calm. At 5:01pm Mason James was born (I won the bet - off by only 7 minutes) weighing 8lbs 5oz and 21 1/4in long and I cried when he did for the first time.

After an extended stay at the hospital with a scary but short time in the NICU, we are home and learning how to be a family of three! I still can't believe I made this beautiful little boy!

DH and I aren't sure that we'll be putting up pics of LO, but this is one of me in the OR when they first put him on my chest.
