Pregnant after IF

Q for a friend: Measuring behind?

I have a friend who recently got a BFP after a long journey, and she had her first ultrasound and is measuring a bit behind.  Her nurse seems to think it's a good thing, but she's obviously nervous.

Those of you who have measured behind early on - can you tell me how far behind you were?  I'm hoping this thread can give her some hope and perspective that it's normal - I did tell her that I measured a few days behind at my first scan, but I'm just one story.

THANKS! :D

Re: Q for a friend: Measuring behind?

  • Sometimes when things are so small measurements can be really fussy. Does she know exactly when she conceived? Cuz for me, if they base my due date off my LMP I'm measuring 5 days behind. But my cycles were wonky. So they say the most accurate due date predictor is an early ultrasound. So based on that first ultrasound I'm right on track. I know it seems so scary but some babies are just slow growers or just small.

  • I won't give specific details because she hasn't given me permission, but she definitely knows when she conceived.  And it's still very early (pre-heartbeat).

  • I measured behind! I measured 5w4d at 5w6d then 6w4d at 6w6d and 7w3d at 7w6d. I then started measuring ahead, at 9w2d I measured 9w3d and at 11w3d I measured 11w5d. My RE told me measuring a bit behind is nothing to worry about, especially so early on. Just tell your friend to stay away from evil Google.

  • In one of my early ultrasounds the nurse told me that I was measuring about ~5 mm behind, which is a lot at that stage, then either she or the LO shifted and suddenly I was a day ahead. There is SO MUCH errors in the tiny measurements at this stage. If the nurse wasn't worried, I wouldn't be either!

  • My first pregnancy I was charting and swore I knew when I ovulated.  But when I went in for my first ultrasound, I thought I was 7 weeks exactly and I only measured 5w5d.  I didn't know it then, but I had an identical twin pregnancy & that could've been part of the reason I measured behind?  I'm not sure.. Good luck to your friend!

  • I've also measured anywhere between 2-4 days behind. It just depends. It depends on the skill of the nurse, the quality of the machine, etc - the margin of error is pretty huge. My RE informed me that up to a 1 week behind is okay. Now I'm 26+2 and baby's doing fine (knock on wood).

  • This pregnancy I've been ranging from a few days behind to a couple of days ahead. Nothing more than 2 days. My OB always told me 5 days ahead or behind is ok, especially if it's consistent.

Last year one of my pregnancies I knew when I ovulated and first us I was almost a week behind. The next 2 ultrasounds showed growth but not a lot. I ended up miscarrying and come to find out she had trisomy 16. My Dr told me at my last us it was probably another chromosome problem that causes it to just grow consistently slower than normal.

I hope things work out for your friend.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I agree with others that when baby is that small, there is always a margin of error.  From what I've seen on my BMB, over a week difference is cause for concern but a couple of days is common - that's assuming she knows exactly when she O'd.  It's nothing anyone should deal with, so hopefully it all works out!

  • Okay so she did IVF, and the embryos were slow to develop and weren't highly rated at transfer. So she knows all the specifics of "ovulation" (or retrieval, in this case) and that they were developing behind the expected rate up to transfer.

My perspective is that they were clearly developing slowly from the beginning, but they've kept developing, so that's a good thing and reason to be optimistic. She's measuring about 4-5 days behind where she'd expect to be, but that means they've kept developing thus far since transfer.

I also mentioned to her that the "2ww" from BFP to an ultrasound with a heartbeat is much harder than an average 2ww from ovulation to BFP/BFN. It really sucks this can't all be easier!!!

  • 4-5 days doesn't sound like something to panic about, but I know with IF brain that any lag can send us into freak out mode.  And (this is me totally making assumptions, no expert data to back it up), if they were low grade when ET happened, they could have implanted later and slowed the progression back a few days?

In my own opinion (again, totally making assumptions), I feel like I implanted kinda early with my high betas, and I measured about 3-4 days ahead at my first u/s.  By my 10w appointment, baby measured right on schedule.  Whether it had anything to do with implantation or just the timing of growth spurts, ranges in dates like that happen.

Hopefully she'll get more definite answers at the next appointment.

  • Was it a fresh transfer? Frozen tend to lag as well.
