When is the Circumcision performed?

For ladies who have dealt with this in the hospital for their sons, when did they take them to do it? Right after birth? Next day?

(and please don't post a diatribe about why circumcisions are bad, we've been there done that on this board, I am still up in the air about doing this but nothing you post will change that, I promise :) and I know I can't control what people post, just googled the timing and it says with 48 hours of birth and wondering what peoples past experiences are. )

Re: When is the Circumcision performed?

  • Well, our son was born at 7:30 a.m., and I believe, if they had done it (we decided against it), it would have been done later on that same day.

  • I feel like ours was 2 days after birth, but time was a little wonky for me at that time.

DS was born at 7 pm, and the circ was in the morning of the second day I believe.

  • If i remember correctly it was the same day as the birth. He was born by 9:30 and they took him a few hours later for it. It was very quick and he slept for awhile after. I imagine if the baby is born later in the day they would do it the following day.
  • With my first, he was born around 10 am, and they did it the following morning, around 7 am.  With my second, he was born in a different hospital that our pedi did not have rights in, so we took him at 1 week to have it done by our pedi as an outpatient.  This one will depend on where baby is born - we're moving in December, and I haven't decided if I want to change docs again this pregnancy (my original OB retired last month) or not...

  • They offered to circ later on the day he was born - he was born at 10 am. Then again, the next day before we were discharged.

We had intended on circumzing but changed our minds once he was born.

  • I think this might be dependent upon the hospitals policies and procedures. I would ask the OB. I'm sure they know.

  • I think 24 hours later. It was done by a pedi at the hospital. Had we want our pedi to do it then it would have been a week post birth

  • hm thats interesting @britt1406, I didn't realize they could do it at a peds office but I guess thats kind of naive of me because they do the religious ones at peoples homes etc. so why not?

I do plan on asking my pediatrician and OB but just wanted to know what other people had happen so I would know what was the norm. per se. I feel like the longer we wait to have it done the more likely I will not go through with it so would like for it to be done on the day he is born. We are scheduled for a C-section at 9:30 a.m. which I know can be pushed later for many reasons so maybe that day...we shall see.
  • This could differ by hospital, too.  My experience was a  little different since DS spend 2 weeks in NICU before we took him home.  They didn't do the circ until the day before he was released.  If you're in a situation with a longer stay, they want to wait until every other benchmark/test has been passed before they do the circ.

Usually if you're going to be in NICU, the doctors won't give too much exact detail on when they expect to release a baby - just in case they can't stick to that given date, but when they start planning the circ & car seat test, you know you're close to going home!!
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • It's recommended within the first 10 days after birth.
Ds1 was the next day. I was a teen. ..And didn't know my options. I thought it had to be done.
    Ds2 was day 6. I didn't want to circ.
    DS3 was day 5. I didn't want to circ.

This one I'm not wanting to circ. And don't plan to.

  • For my son it was done the next day by one of the OBs in the practice. I had a 2 night stay at the hospital so it wasn't until the next morning that we were discharged.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • Our son's was done the morning after he was born, by the pediatrician; about 24 hours after birth.
  • Check with your pediatrician, or the pediatrician who will see your son in the hospital. The only pediatricians who have privileges at my hospital aren't ones I am considering (due to distance to their offices) so I have a meeting to discuss their standard tests and procedures, including circumcision, for post-birth care in the hospital.

My insurance specifically says it will pay for circumcision before hospital discharge, so we would have to pay out of pocket if we waited. Just check into that if you are thinking about waiting.

  • Depends on the doctor. Ours was the next morning, but he was born in the afternoon. We were told we could have it done then at the hospital or go back whenever we were ready. We planned on having it done, but the hospital staff was really good about not being too pushy on any of the controversial issues.

I had my son at 7:02 pm on a Thursday and they did his Saturday morning.  It was done by the pedi before we were discharged.  However, at the hospital that I work at, it is performed by the OB.

  • My DS was born in the evening at 6:48pm ...  I believe they did the procedure the next day, maybe midmorning?  It's fuzzy.  But, next day for sure.

  • I'm a FTM but I asked my OB about this today since we know we are having a boy and will circumcise him.  She said she will do it at the hospital most likely the day after he is born.
  • I believe for us it was the following day. Quick and no tears. He came back asleep. Then they showed us the different ways to properly clean him and to put A&D on him so no infection or anything would come about.
  • Thank you everyone for the comments, meeting with the pediatrician today so going to ask what the standard procedure will be at the hospital. My cousin said her OB performed the circumcision and that was standard, never heard of that before and I feel more comfortable with our pediatrician but either way if my OB can perform a c-section on me I suppose I can trust him to do this right :)
  • Mine will all depend on my insurance.  My pedi said some insurance will cover hospital circumcisions and others will only allow office circumcisions.  I still have to do my research on my insurance.

  • I don't think it matters when it's done. I've had friends who have had to circ their boys at 3 and 5. I think it's just more convenient if you're going to do it, to so it early on?

Our was performed by our Pedi.

  • Well I just got back from peds, she told my husband its not medically necessary but not medically unnecessary so its a social/family decision. Which I already knew but wanted him to hear it as well. She said although it may not be the norm, OB's at the hospital have to perform it because it is considered surgery and so for malpractice reasons it has been determined (in this hospital, not everywhere I realize) that only OB's can perform because they are surgeons. Interesting stuff. She said since I am having a C-section they can probably schedule it for within 24 hours of the section. DH wants to go forward with it so he will be on diaper duty and I will probably cry, but in the end I think it is the right decision for our family. Thank you ladies for all of your input on timing etc. :)
  • I had my husband on diaper duty for the first few days after it was done. I cried, not going to lie.
They healed quickly though, and it didn't seem to bother them.

  • DS was born on a Saturday night and he was circumcised Monday afternoon before we went home. My OB did the circumcision but I wish it was the pediatrician. I have issues with how it was done, but its too late now.
