Even though it seems like a long ways away, we are in the process of looking for child care for our little guy when I go back to work. We are scheduled to meet with a woman next week who does in-home child care. I already know that she is licensed, how much she charges, what her hours are, and how many other children she has. But for STM (or FTM who have already done this), what are some important questions I should be asking? Anything you wished you had asked before choosing someone?
Re: Child Care Provider Questions
1) Ratio of staff to infants (and toddlers eventually)?
2) General childcare philosophy?
3) Typical daily routine in the infant room (nap, feeding, diaper schedule)?
4) Walks outside? Activities?
5) Communication (how often are parents updated on their kid, notification if hurt / sick, daily updates on diaper changes, feedings, naps etc)?
6) Policy on putting babies to sleep / nap (only in crib (self soothe), allowed to rock?)? Nap according to schedule of center or baby’s needs?
7) Days that the center is closed? Daily hours?
8) Procedures for snow / inclement weather?
9) Policy on sick kids (how long without fever?)
10) Staff first aid/CPR training? How often are they updated?
11) Vaccination policy?
12) Policy on breast milk? Food allergy policy for later on when doing solid foods?
13) How often are diapers checked?
14) How often are toys cleaned / sanitized?
15) Can other authorized people pick up baby with our permission (grandma, aunt, etc)? Can we leave the carseat for them on these days? Security to prevent random strangers from picking kids up?
16) Visitation policy for parents?
17) Discipline policies (for when they’re older)?
18) How are kids promoted to next room (age, developmental level?)?
19) References for current / former parents?
20) Staff turnover rate? Consistency of caregivers upon arrival / in room daily?
21) Tuition? Part-time availability?
