So I realize, the protocol for dealing with an unruly boss/manager will be different for each place of business depending on culture and dynamics, but any tips for dealing with a negative, sarcastic, micromanager without overstepping as am employee?

::Edited OP to remove specifics:: thank you to those who replied already :)

  • Does he have the power to fire you without consulting with other managers?

@eva116 he's the one who hired me, so my best guess is yes, he does. Which why I've refrained from saying much thus far.

  • @gothefawktosleep‌ Thanks, I'd love to hear your feedback. I'm stumped with how to deal with this. Depending on when you come back, my original OP may be DD'd, but obviously the thread will still be here. :)

  • @gothefawktosleep‌ its a family owned business. This mgr isn't technically family, but has been there a loooong time. The owner is pretty far removed from the internal workings and employee related stuff.

  • And I 100% agree with you that it baffles me how this type of behavior is considered acceptable in the restaurant business. There is so much shit that gets swept under the rug.

  • I know it might be hard but the first thing I think you should do is talk to him privately. Something along the lines of "I wanna understand if I'm doing something wrong, I would appreciate if you gave feedback in a private and calm manner". Try not to be aggressive or accuse him of anything but also don't be defensive. Just frame it as I wanna do my job better and understand what you expect of me.

Depending on how this and other similar conversations go, then try to go to higher-ups/other managers. I'm saying this because if you go over his head it doesn't look too good if you didn't try to work it out directly with him first, KWIM?
  • It sounds like we are in similar situations. I run one restaurant while the owner and his wife are running another in a different town.

GL...keep me posted, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Ugh. Sorry to hear you're dealing with a similar load of crap. GL to you too and thanks.

  • @billybumbler thanks. I may ask him directly next time something like this comes up. But unfortunately, from what I see, I dont think much will change. Bringing up complaints to other managers doesn't go very far.

  • It might not help much to talk to him or go to other managers, but I still think that if you do go to other managers/higher ups it looks much better if you say I tried to resolve this by talking to him multiple times and he's been unreasonable.

Ive worked as a server in this particular restaurant for almost a year now, but I worked as kitchen help, hostess, and server about 10 years ago as well in a different restaurant. In between I did office/admin asst/customer service work.

@SweetSouthernMomma08‌ thanks for your help! I actually have to run out for a bit but I can PM you when I get back :)
