Nap & Sleep Schedule

Like clockwork, my 2nd hits 1 1/2 and quits napping just like my first ds.  Now I know my ds 1 NEEDED a nap until just after 2 because he was a cranky mess.  So this time around I'm going to try to get him back on schedule and possibly try waking him in the morning so he'll me more tired for an afternoon nap.  Currently he would only be ready for a nap at around 3:30 and that's too late.  So what does your little one's nap/sleep schedule look like.

Re: Nap & Sleep Schedule

  • wakes up between 7 and 8. nap around 1:30 for two hours b/c of scheduling. could easily go down earlier and sometimes catnaps in car around 11:30 if we're out driving. goes to sleep b/w 7 and 7:30.

my older DS boycotted naps from around 2 to almost 2.5. i kept putting him in the crib every day for "quiet time" and also moved his nap time later, and he eventually started napping again. i knew he wasn't ready to give up naps and i certainly wasn't ready for him to give them up. i highly recommend persevering.

  • Yes thank you, I believe I will persevere.  I've had one too many grouchy evenings with him.  I'm kind of attachment parent, rock/nurse to sleep type.  So yesterday, I let him nurse until he said all done and I put him in the crib and said night night  and left him for 5 minutes.  He freaked of course and then I came rocked and nursed until he was all done then I said night night and put him back in the crib for 5 min.  He freaked again and I went and got him and rock and nursed some more an.  Ithis time he went to sleep.  This is how I eventually got my older one falling asleep on his ownIT was a bit later than I liked, but I let him sleep for 1.5 hours and then I woke him and he did great.   I'm in luck today, he was up about an hour early than usual, so I think I might just be back on track.  Whew.

  • you could also try putting him to bed earlier and easing him into earlier schedule? slowly push bedtime earlier about 10/15 min for a few days at at time.

  • DS will be 23 months at the end of the week and we have been at one nap since the beginning of the year. His schedule used to be very erratic, but once we moved into our new house two months ago, I decided to get him on a schedule. It is led by him, but once we did it, things have been really good even if they aren't exact. (He also stays home with me, so I can let him lead the schedule.)

Wake up between 6:00 and 7:30. More often than not these days, it is right at 7:00.
Nap between 1:00 and 2:15 for 2 to 2.5 hours. He would fall asleep earlier than that if were in the car, so all morning outings happen early enough to be home by lunch time then nap.
We start bedtime routine around 7:00 to be laying down no later than 8:00. He is usually asleep by 9:00.

If he misses a nap (sometimes this happens when our routine is off), I won't let him start a nap past 3:00 and we move dinner, etc. up so he is laying down by 7:00 and he usually goes almost right to sleep.

DD is a little over 3 and dropped her morning nap on her own around 16-17 mo- she stopped falling asleep in the mornings when I put her down.  DS is 20 mo and I forced the phasing out of the morning nap around 16 mo just to give us a longer window in the morning to be out.  He probably still could take a morning nap.  With both kids I started putting them down for 1 long nap around 11, and gradually moved it to 12:30/1.  DD is fighting naps a bit now- possibly ready to stop the afternoon nap?  Regardless, she will have quiet time in her room.  Mom needs break time.  DS sleeps around 2.5-3 hours and when DD sleeps it's usually 1.5-2 hours.

Both kids go to bed around 8 and sleep until 6/6:30.
