Talking how many words?

How many Lo's are still not saying many actual words?

My Lo will be 18 months next week and I thought they had said they should say around 20-25..he still is saying more around 6 or so(mama, dada, uh oh, up, more, hi, bye) hell shake his head yes that he wants more etc.. I dont know if I should worry and was wondering if other peoples Los arent talking that much yet. He makes tons of noises and fully understands us..if we say its time for bed or bath hell walk to the stairs and go upstairs etc.

I may be weird, but I've never counted their words. I just pay attention to new words and how often they appear.

I agree with PP about not comparing at this age. Some kids are more physical, and have spent a lot of energy learning to climb, jump, run etc. where other babies are just taking their first steps. The same is true for talking. Some kids can make complete sentences, where others just utter a few words. All are normal. From having my 3 kids, I found that the 2 that were late to walk (14 months and 16 months), were ridiculously verbal.....whereas my current LO was walking at 9 months and hardly speaks real words at all.

DS still only says Mama and Dada and he is 17 months. We just started speech therapy last week.

I haven't counted how many he actually says. I just know it seems like he has a new one every few days. His latest one is mess.....aaaaaand he will make a mess and say "uh oh mess" lol

He can say cheese please that sounds more like 'chee pees" it's so freaking cute

From everything I've read, your LO does not seem behind. All kids progress differently in so many areas. C says about 12 words consistently, maybe more, but some are not pronounced perfectly. Like, cheese is "sheese", etc. But I count it because he says it all the time.

C is almost 17 months, but when I was 17 months I would sing "Hungy Eyes" to the dirty dancing soundtrack in the backseat of the car. Some things just shouldn't be compared. And doesn't language develop quicker for girls?

Ds2 has about 10 words but repeats a lot. I know repeating doesn't count as words but he's getting there. I was told by pedi that they don't look for a certain number, just that they are progressing. FWIW DS1 had no words at 17 months and he's a chatty 3 year old now. He was in EI for a year before testing out. I think he just needed time though.

Yeah. I also don't count words they say as "words". They parrot a lot. I ask them to say something and they do, but that doesn't mean they know it as a word. If I counted every word they repeated, there would be dozens more than what I do consider a word.

She says momma and hi. Kind of says bye sometimes but not on a regular basis. She is one of the younger ones here just 16 months on the 5th.

Thanks! I figured hes fine but wanted to put my mind at ease. I shouldnt read crap on the internet..they were just saying oh htey should be putting words together etc Im like hes no where near that. I figure if he can understand things he must be able to hear and comprehend. haha He is all over the place running around too.

We really only have three consitent words, mama, dada, baba, He has some other words he uses much less consistently. But, he gestures a lot and knows some sign language and we seem to communicate well.
When I read the AW posts, it makes me feel a little bad. I mean there are some kids who are obviously way ahead on this. But, I didn't talk till 18 months and have two master degrees and my sister didn't talk till 20 months and she went Yale. So I figure LO is ahead of my sister and I, so he is probably doing ok. My parents are pretty impressed with his verbal skills considering how much their own children lagged.

Words she uses regularly and in reference to something?...10

Words she understands...tons and in French and English. She will also repeat a word but won't necessarily use it.

We're mostly mama, dada, the dogs names, banana, more, milk (but in French), no, nose, head, shoe, outside (but in French), what is it? Bed, shirt, buhbye, âllo, kitty.

Is so more than 10. Ok well anyways that's it really.

E just had his 18 mo appt today and she said 7-12 words is the "norm" for this age. Some say many more, some less. He really doesn't say many at all yet (2-3 consistently) but she wasn't overly-concerned and said we'd talk about having him evaluated if there wasn't a language burst by age 2. @john5111 20-25 seems really high for the average 18 month old, i wouldn't worry as much if his receptive language is there !

My son only says Dada, uh oh and just started saying mama this week, but he signs more, eat, all done, and please. They said we will do a hearing test at 18months. My son also understands everything we say
