Are you worried?

So with the new case of Ebola and the fact this lady took a plane ride from ohio to dallas one day before showing symptoms, are you worried? I'am cause that is alot of people going to very many different places that could potetionaly have the illness. I hope it ends very very soon!

Yes and no. The rational part of my brain isn't super worried. The people that were in the apartment with the original patient are outside of the 21 day watch period and haven't shown any symptoms. However, the germaphobe in me is starting to consider driving instead of flying for the holidays

Yes and no.  An outbreak of a very deadly disease has always been a fear of mine, and I'm in Ohio (the second nurse was in Cleveland/Akron this weekend).

But I found this article on the outbreak in Nigeria reassuring: https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nigeria-stopped-ebola-2014-10

tl;dr--It started the same way as the U.S. (patient zero flew into the country).  He was already symptomatic, vomited ON the plane, and collapsed in the airport in Lagos, a city of 20 million people.  The total number of people infected were 19, but they were all traced back to him and the health care workers who cared for him.  There were no cases of people on the plane/in the airport (despite him vomiting and collapsing) being infected.  The virus was successfully contained and the outbreak has been declared over.

  • I feel like I am more concerned than the average person. Here's my reasoning...
    a. it actually can be transmitted in the air through vapors if you are in close enough contact within a certain time frame (CDC website), which most of the media is denying
    b. the incubation period is up to 21 days and some of the symptoms like sore throat and diarrhea are common c. I live in Texas.
DH and I both contracted West Nile a few years ago and that shit was not fun. I'm not about to stock up on non-perishables or stop going places, but I am nervous about it spreading. I hope it stays contained. I know it probably will.
  • As a nurse who may have to be in the front line- kinda. I live close enough to two big airports and the snow birds are coming.
  • My rational brain says no- but my germiphobe brain says yes. I caught myself hand sanitizing and not touching anything while we were in NYC last weekend. I looked at the stairway railing into the subway and just saw Ebola written all over it. I think there is no way you can't slightly worry about it because it's scary and it's here but I fully trust they will get it and keep it under control.
  • Idk, I keep trying to compare this to the SARS "epidemic" not long ago that has since become a complete thing of the past. Ebola is not new. But like you guys have said, the germaphobe in me is panicking a little.

I wasn't worried until our local news station just popped up on facebook saying they have a patient in quarantine at Yale new haven hospital with Ebola like symptoms

Especially since they were in Liberia for 3 weeks and Yale decided it was ok for them not to quarantine themselves for 21 days after they got home. Why not take the precaution? SMDH.
  • I am worried. I'm not freaking out yet, but I am worried.
