Pumping at night

Now that LO is sleeping 6-8 hrs at night (10 weeks old), I'm worried about my milk production dwindling. I noticed over the weekend I haven't been able to pump as much for extra stash and yesterday she seemed really hungry almost every 2.5 hrs when we were at every 3.5-4 hrs last week. She is EBF and gets a bottle with BM when I'm at work, and my mother and MIL tend to keep feeding her if she "seems to be starving" (one occasion I was told she ate 5+ ounces in one feeding - i was horrified!) I was pumping an extra 8 oz a day, on Monday DD ate 3 oz more than I pumped while I was gone. So two things : 1) am I screwing things up by not waking up to pump at the 2-3 am feeding that DD is now sleeping through- bc that is just sucky if she finally is sleeping a solid amount of time but I still have to wake up. 2) did anyone notice a dip in BM production after Mirena? I was told it wouldn't effect this but I had it placed last week and that could be the culprit. If so, did you recover from it? Any advice is welcome. Being back at work (traveling home health PT) makes pumping on a schedule a bit challenging. I'm just worried I won't be able to keep up with DD's needs on BM alone!

Re: Pumping at night

  • Following! While my LO slept until 5 last night, I awoke with rock hard boobs and milk all over my PJs at around 3. Are all you ladies waking up to pump? I really didn't have a choice and actually had to wake up and pump again due to a pocket of rock hard milk that didn't come down the first time I pumped. So much for sleeping through the night.

  • I asked about this before and with the advice I got I came to the conclusion not to pump in the MOTN. You need your sleep. Your boobs will get used to the longer stretches at night. Mine did. I have been pumping after the first morning feed and am getting 4 oz extra every morning. At first you don't get much, but after a few days it really increases.

  • thanks @sosayweall !! Good to hear - I was freaking out bc I was only getting a little with pumping (1-2 ounces vs my hefty 7-8 ounces previously). Sorry I didn't see the previous thread!

  • Exactly what @SoSayWeAll said.  Your boobs will adjust and you should enjoy your sleep!  Your supply will adjust.  If you find yourself still needing more milk for daycare then you might have to add in a pumping session, but your body may adjust and you hopefully will find that you are pumping more over time.

Also, as to baby eating more, it makes sense if you think about it.  If baby eats on average 24 oz of breastmilk in a 24 hour period, then if she is sleeping through the night she will either eat more at each feeding, or she may feed more frequently during the day to add up to those 24oz.

  • I asked this question at one of our local stores that specializes in BF.  (It was opened by a mom who was having trouble BF her first and could find no resources in our area).  The owner recommended not stopping a MOTN pumping because her supply dropped dramatically and she could only supply breast milk until month 5.  While I was asking her, a (pregnant) customer who had a toddler with her asked if she could also offer her option, which was the same as the owner.  Her supply dropped too once she stopped pumping/feeding in MOTN.  That being said, I know moms with oversupply issues who have stopped MOTN pumping/feedings and are now regulated more.  I'm producing about 25-30oz a day so I have resolved that I will be pumping MOTN as long as I want to give my baby a full day's worth of breast milk.

  • Hmm...sounds like (surprise!) everyone's boobs respond differently. I guess I'll tough through MOTN pumping until after 3 months and see how that goes. However, how the heck do you hold off on pumping/feeding for when I do want to eliminate that MOTN pump? My boobs were like STONE! Any advice?
