Switch to toddler bed if not climbing out yet?

It sounds like a lot of the LOs are switching or have already switched to a toddler bed. DD is still in the crib and has not tried to climb out yet, but has been resisting being placed in her crib lately. She'll lay down on the floor but cries when I pick her up to put her in the crib. Could it be that she'd do better with a toddler bed? Would you make the switch if your LO weren't yet crawling out?

Re: Switch to toddler bed if not climbing out yet?

  • I would keep lo in a crib for as long as you can! We had to switch over because the crib will be baby brothers & we wanted ds to adapt to his big boy bed far before hand. I spent a good hour of my day trying to keep him in his bed for a nap. If it's not broken, don't fix it!!

  • I'm also in the same boat. I wanted DS used to his new room and bed before DD arrives. I didn't want him to think that she was "kicking him out" of his room.

  • We are keeping dd in her crib as long as possible. She is content in it and will be sharing a room with DS when he arrives in December. I don't want to worry about her giving him things in the motn. Once she climbs out, we will convert her crib to the toddler bed.

  • I'm keeping DD in her crib for as long asI can. We'll move from this housing when she's 2 yr 4 mo and I'd rather just keep her in her crib through then. I don't want to have to worry about her climbing stuff in her room yet.
  • @Kyleedawn08‌ I've been gone - did I totally miss the transition?!

And OP - it's a hard judgment call for sure. T wasn't climbing out but was trying and we both just had a feeling he was ready. He's honestly done great, but the negatives include him not sleeping in as long, only napping 1 hour instead of 2, and sometimes falling out of bed waking him! The positives are he still sttn and he goes to bed with no fuss - loves going night-night in his choo-choo! I can only say go with your guy on this!

  • We haven't made the switch yet. I was thinking of doing it around his birthday but, honestly, he loves his crib and usually asks to get in it at night so I'm really nervous about making the switch.

  • J loves his crib, especially with the addition of a pillow and a Mickey Mouse pillow case! He hasn't tried climbing out once, so I'm not in any hurry. The bed converts easily to a toddler bed, so when he actually does start climbing out we'll just remove that front rail and install the rail guard. I'm thinking sometime this spring...unless he decides to start climbing out.

  • He could have climbed out if he tried and I wanted to avoid that. He was also up once a night because his pacifier fell out of the crib, or he wanted a book that wasn't in the crib, etc. He wanted the independence and freedom.

Now in his bed, he still wakes up at night but he can deal with it himself instead of waking me up.

Yep Ben is in his big boy bed- well for now his crib with the toddler rail that came with it- too lazy to take the real toddler bed out of the box to put it together.. Oops! It's gone ok for the most part, really just naps he has issues with.

  • DD talks to herself for up to an HOUR in the morning before fussing for us to get her... I absolutely DREAD losing that time to caffeinate, prep for the day, etc.

  • @spainy17‌ T was up for 45 minutes this morning before he walked to his door to come out! You might not lose that time, jut put some quiet toys on the floor!

  • @ambmama, that gives me hope!  DD just looooooves her crib and I seriously cannot imagine freeing her from baby jail at this point. :)
