GTKY: Trick or Treaters

Because I love Halloween...

Do you answer the door for trick-or-treaters? If so, how many do you get and how much do you estimate you spend on candy each year?

  • We usually get quite a few. my best friend usually hands candy out with me but she recently moved to a different town. Last year we cooked dinner and passed out probably 6 bags of candy. I may just pass out candy by myself this year, I'm not sure. DH will be working and not home.

I have been invited to a Halloween party at a friends house but seeing how they block off the streets in her neighborhood, my 39 week pregnant butt will not be going because I would have to park outside the subdivision and walk to her house. No.

  • We take DS trick or treating starting around 6:30. Home by 7. I answer the door prior to trick or treating and up until 9 (we leave the door open and screen closed so they don't knock/ring the bell).

We live in a HUGE kid friendly neighborhood. I spend about $15-$20 on candy and usually run out.

  • I always enjoy giving out candy. When I was in high school I used to dress up to answer the door because I thought it was fun, I had a witch-like costume I wore. This year I don't know what's going to happen, my due date is Nov 2 but if baby stays breech I will have a c-section a few days before Halloween so I will not be giving out any candy if that happens.

  • I dressed up to pass out candy last year. :)
We get the big candy bars from SAMs club. Most kids know to only take one, but some of the younger ones still want their handful....lol. The really cute ones get away with it too!

DH normally buys the candy so I am not sure what he spends...probably around 60-80 $.
I love seeing all the kids dressed up. :)

  • We live on a street with mostly older couples or families with older kids. DD is by far the youngest on our street. We have never had one trick or treater and DH says he never had any before we got married either. We will be taking DD to our church's trunk or treat.

  • Not sure how many we get...  but I usually spend $20 on chocolate bars and put them outside on a chair in a spooky looking chest with a sign on it that says "Take 2".  Every year the chest is ALMOST empty by the time we get home.

  • We usually get 100-150 kids, crazy if you ask me! I hand out candy and usually spend about $60-80 on candy.

  • I would love to pass out candy....

But we've lived in an apartment building in the city for the past five years and never get any. There are some kids who live in the building, which makes me wonder where they go on Halloween....

  • I *love* Halloween, having cool stuff to hand out, decorations, little kids in costumes, and even the teenagers that switch costumes and return over and over!
However, it seems like there are fewer kids in the neighborhood each year, so we don't get many trick or treaters... but I always encourage friends & family to bring their Littles over!
  • We live in a small gated condo building, so no trick or treater's. When my parents lived in the burbs we went over to their house just so I could dress up and hand out candy :) This year we will have a one week old baby so, probably just staying home. I'll probably buy a bag (or two) of candy just in case ;)
  • We live on a busy street without sidewalks so I'm pretty sure we don't get trick or treaters, but I'm not actually sure. We go to SIL's house every year because she actually has kids come to her door and a neighborhood to walk through with DD. It's really important for us to have a fun tradition because Halloween is the day DH initially hurt is back, so we want way more happy memories to be distracted by.

Also, if I thought we had Kids trying to t.o.t. I'd leave a bowl of candy out, but I seriously doubt we do. So the bowl of candy stays inside to eat when I get home from SIL :)
  • We don't really hand any out anymore, because my husband works nights and I take DD out. Before DD though we lived across the street from a school and would get a ton of kids. We'd hand out candy til 8:30 or 9 ish when all the little kids were out, then shut it down when the older kids would come by.

  • For some reason we get TONS of kids trick or treating in our neighborhood. Way more than live here. I think they come over from the apartment complex nearby. There's usually a small line of cars that move slowly down the main drag as their kids go house to house. Always makes me nervous having so many extra vehicles while small kids are out in the dark. The house at the very front of our neighborhood does a cool haunted tunnel thing that I think attracts more people to the neighborhood too.

DH refuses to hand out candy, but I usually sit on the porch with a big bowl after our kids are done trick or treating. I love seeing kids in their costumes. The younger the better.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but I really really hate it when the teens come out in their street clothes with a plastic bag. Thankfully we have a large number of very young kids in the area, so by the time the teens come out I'm usually very low or out of candy. I usually only buy 1 bag, but I'm also not there during peak trick or treater time because I take the kids out.

  • @sparklingwhit The Prisoner is pretty high end wine to pair with candy! I just offered it at a tasting I organized recently for my wine club (I was the girl just smelling the wine). Next year I'm definitely going to suggest that to my hubby for Halloween festivities.

  • kyliedaniellexx you would think so, but no! I really wish I knew what the kids who live in my building do.... maybe mall trick or treating? Or the community center or something? I think I'll ask the next family I see!

  • I live in a high rise apartment building. We have a sign up at the front desk where you write your name and apartment if you are going to hand out candy. You also write your "open hours." I did this fairly late last year and got about five kids. Most of the kids are much younger and probably trick or treated before I got home from work.

Trick or treating is probably among the top five things I'm looking forward to as a parent of a young child.

FFFC: I think high schoolers should go trick or treating! They are still kids!

I love wine so very much! I sniff DH's wine all the time :)

Plus it pairs great with dark choc Kit Kats.

  • I love Halloween, and am sad that I may not be home this year to hand out candy. (My c-section is scheduled for 10/28.) We are the cool house in the neighborhood that hands out full-sized candy bars. I love hearing the kids exclaim "WHOA! BIG CANDY BARS!" :D We usually get under 30 kids, so we buy 1 box of candy bars from BJ's wholesale, but I always buy a small bag of "normal" Halloween candy, just in case we run out. We spend maybe $20-$25.

  • This is our 1st year in our houses and we both grew up in the country. My sister is 2 blocks away so I will take my almost 2 yr old trick or treating the 2 blocks to my sisters house. Then my husband wants to hide. We may be the super lame house handing out something other than candy, like pencils or stickers or those little tattoos.... We have not decided yet, I don't want to eat all the candy and our daughter has multiple allegies so if she got fruit snacks instead of candy so,where someday I would be super happy
  • DH and I live where the county line starts so for the past 5 or so years we've had maybe 30-50 trick or treaters total. Even though we barely get any kids I always buy candy just in case. We live right by a school so you'd think we'd have more kids trick or treating but nope :/ Halloween is DH favorite favorite holiday so we always find a way to enjoy it :)

P.S. I just started visiting the BMB's a month or so ago and you ladies crack me up! Also very thankful for lots of insight every one has contributed since I'm a FTM.
