cars

so we are looking for a bigger car before the twins get here, and i really want a 3 row suv, but dh wants a minivan all of a sudden. he says they are the most practical, which i think is dumb because there are a lot of good options that arent minivans. ive just never been a van type of person, and its bs that he is trying to force me to get a car i dont like! anyone have experience or recommendations?! thanks!

Re: cars

  • Do you have just the twins or any additional kids? Do you plan on having any more? I test drove pretty much every 3 row SUV and with the third row up there is basically no trunk space- certainly not to fit even most double strollers etc. The only exceptions to this would be the Suburban or the Yukon XL.  In most three row SUV's you can get more storage space by folding down all or part of the 3rd row when necessary but it can be tough to get back there to buckle a kid in- even with captains chairs in the 2nd row.

  • I didn't want a van myself, at all. I was completely against it. But after looking at SUV options with a 3rd row I quickly realized it wasn't going to work. The van is great! I can easily get to the back seat because of the captain chairs in the 2nd row, the trunk space is great. I now love my van and am so glad i didn't find an SUV. Plus a lot if the bigger SUV's were much more expensive than most of the vans we looked at.

  • We have 3 and went w an SUV. I have zero desire for a van at all.

You put three kids in the second row and keep the third row folded down for more storage. You do have to pay attention to the seats you buy but it's totally possible to fit 3 across in an SUV. I don't have a need for a third row right now, honestly.

FWIW, the Honda Pilot is a great car for 3 across. We have an Acura MDX which is built on a Honda platform.

  • We just bought the Honda Pilot. I was adamant I would not drive a minivan, totally get why others like practicality of one I just didn't want. The Pilot I can fit all 3 car seats across in middle row while leaving 3rd folded down w/ tons of space. Later when double stroller isn't needed it still has good space with 3rd row in use. I love my pilot!!!

We have a honda pilot which has a third row and worked great for us until I became pregnant with number 3. If there is any chance you will be having more I'd go with a minivan. I hate them but wish I had. The problem with our pilot is the third row is useless now because we have 3 car seats in the second and :
    a) can't access this row unless we take a seat out
    b) if we do take a seat out and use the third row there is not enough trunk space for stroller groceries etc.
Its a pain in the butt getting the girls in the car as it is , when the new baby arrives I can only imagine it will get worse.
I really want a minivan now.

  • I have a Toyota Highlander a 21 month old and twins and I get 3 across. Not a minivan gal either and I had this car before and did not want a new car payment because they are going to trash it anyway. 3rd row is unusable for any of the kids though. Total PITA to get back there and buckle a car seat. It really depends on the car seats too. Check out car seats for the littles. They have some really good options for pretty much any car.

  • We got an oddysey because of all the seating options with 8 seats and 5 latch points. Right now we plan on having 3 across the second row. I think the sliding doors are what really sold a mini van to me. I had a CUV before and the doors didn't open wide enough, especially in parking lots, to lift a bucket seat in and out easily. And even if we have the back row up there is still so much cargo space.

  • We've been surviving with my Kia Soul and 3 fit across the back perfectly, luckily my 5 year old is just in a booster at this point and hubby's 2 cab Tacoma fits all 3 as well.  We didn't want a car payment right now but when we do upgrade, most likely next summer, I'll be looking for a 3rd row SUV that all three will still fit across in the 2nd row.  I just can't do a minivan out of personal choice.

  • Odyssey!
For sure take your car seats with you car shopping & make your decision.
My hubby purchased a 3rd row pathfinder & infant seats do not fit behind the driver seat when he is driving. & the passenger will be an inch from the glove box.
I am getting an odyssey to drive & am expecting my first children... A set of twins:)
    Good luck!!!
  • My DH has a Toyota Highlander that we plan to use for a while..... The more I think about it, the more I would like to get a Honda Odysee because even though I hate Minivans I am pretty sure it will be easier in the long run. I'm not sure if/when we will be able to get one as we are going to be making payments on DH's car for another four years and don't want an old one. I insist on having the latch systems and the back up camera. :p
