Expecting Twins - Supplemental Insurance?

Hello!  I am new to the boards here - due April 1 with twin boys and we are SO excited :)  I am wondering if anyone is familiar with supplemental medical insurance for pregnancy?  Im not sure what its called exactly, but I know it exists and am just not sure where to purchase, how much it costs, etc.  The reason I am asking is because my DH has 11 year old twin girls already from his first marriage.  They were mono-amniotic and born very early, so spent several months in NICU, and their mom was on bedrest for quite a while in the hospital  They had a supplemental policy they had purchased which paid out benefits for her and for the girls and helped with the extra expenses, and they had heard about it on the multiples boards.  With our twins, it is a much less high-risk situation, as they are fraternal and all looks well thus far, but we are nervous as they are measuring right where my son was at this point and he was born three weeks early at 9 and half pounds.  My doctor has already told me to be prepared as these little sweeties may be large as well, and I could end up on some sort for bedrest toward the end.  Also, I am self-employed and should I end up on bed rest or should the boys come early and need extra time in the hospital, it would definitely help to have the reassurance of a policy like that to help out.  Sorry this is so long!  I was just hoping someone on here would have some insight or info :)  Thanks in advance ladies and I'm excited to be joining the group!!

Re: Expecting Twins - Supplemental Insurance?

  • Most programs that reimburse for medical expenses and pregnancy costs (like Aflac) are programs you must sign up for a minimum of six months prior to becoming pregnant in order to be reimbursed for pregnancy related expenses. It isn't something you can sign up for after becoming pregnant.

If you are lower income, you can inquire with the state about medicaid programs that can assist with providing better coverage than your current insurance, or you can apply directly with your providers, clinics, and hospitals for financial aid or expense reduction.

  • Agree w PP. I don't know of any supplemental insurance that will work the way you want it to if you're already pregnant when you sign up.

Some states do offer short term disability.

  • I had 2 AFLAC policies through my DH's employer and they both required that I not become pregnant within the first 30 days after signing up. I'm sorry but I think you are probably too late to obtain extra insurance coverage - good luck and hopefully you won't need it!

  • As PPs have said, I don't think this type of insurance can be purchased after you get pregnant (how would they make money if people on bought it when they needed it?).

Just know that not all twin pregnancies result in bed rest and NICU stays. I know that is far from an insurance policy you were looking for, but it does happen.

It sounds like you are lower risk so that's a great start!

  • I have AFlAC and the only they offer for pregnancy is short term disability. I was covered for about a month since my policy was already in effect prior to my becoming pregnant. I think unfortunately you may be too late to sign up and have this pregnancy covered but it doesn't hurt to call
    And ask.
