Family...sigh...

We just announced we are pregnant again. Yay! Due in May 2015. We announced by sending a picture to our family with a caption "Happy Halloween from our family". DH's family figured it out within 5 seconds. My family...no one got it.

The next day I explained it to them. And after explaining here are their reactions on separate phone calls.

My mom, "so, I guess you are happy?"
My dad, "are you excited?"
My 21 yr old sister, "so, was it planned?"

Excuse me? Yes, of course I am happy and excited for this pregnancy. Why wouldn't I be? And besides mind your own business, yes it was planned. Because of a medical condition I am on birth control unless actively trying to get pregnant. Just disappointed at my family's reactions. Wish it had been received better. Yes our kids will be 15 months apart and we wanted it that way.

End vent. Just needed to complain a bit and announce we are pregnant again.

Edit: grammar

Re: Family...sigh...

  • Cute announcement.  It's too bad that your family was not more excited, but I think you will find that you get that response pretty often when your kids are close together.  Our kids are 17 months apart, and people like to raise their eyebrows.  I head off the comments by saying "we had a lot of trouble having a baby the first time around, so we didn't want to wait too long, and were lucky to be able to have another baby without the same problems we had before."

Plus, I think everyone in general is less excited about baby #2, no matter the spacing.  Which is too bad, but I think that's just the way it is.

    Congratulations!

  • Congrats! So sorry your family isn't more supportive.  My sister's girls are 14 mos apart.  It was super hard when they were under 3, now it's great!  Your family is probably concerned about the short term, just let them know you are happy and ready for the challenge.  In the long term, this was a decision you made for your family and it'll be wonderful.

  • I'm sorry your family wasn't excited for you. We went through something similar and it was very hurtful.

I think it's great news! Congrats!

  • Congrats :) Maybe your family doesn't realise how unsupportive their comments came across?

I think you are right. I need to be ready for more comments about spacing as we announce it to more people. And you're right baby #2 gets less enthusiasm. But I am just as excited!

Thanks for all the congrats! And for letting me vent. I'm sure when baby arrives it will be more exciting for everyone else.
  • Congratulations! My sister and I are 15 months apart. We were the best of friends, when we weren't at each other's throats!

  • Congrats! That's great news, very happy for you. Mine are 16 months apart and I love it. I got pregnant again when baby #1 was 9 months old. I actually got opposite reactions. By the time baby #1 was 6 months old, I got comments from family & friends that we should start TTC again. It was none of their business. I was surprised by them but didn't mind since I wanted my kids close apart.

Having 2 under 2 is busy, but it's great! You'll love it. Be sure to check the 2under2 message board. Congrats again!
