When to go shopping?

When do you plan to go shopping for baby items?  Especially big ticket items?  After your baby shower, Black Friday, or after the holidays?  Or now?

We've got a few big ticket items we want to buy & wondering if we should wait to see if someone gifts it to us or wait for holiday sales.  Do baby stuff even go on sale during the holidays?  Clueless, cheap/frugal, FTM needs your help.

Re: When to go shopping?

  • We have been purchasing big items throughout... We have been searching stores for clearance items and pick them up if we find them.

  • We have been purchasing things here an there as I find good deals on them, our crib was on sale over labor for 150 off! I plan on getting everything else once I have my completion coupons/ probably around black Friday.
  • I'm waiting until after Christmas to buy what I want.
I've got Christmas gifts I need to buy for my kids and husband first.

Granted, I need nothing, I've got it all. But there are certain things I want, and that stuff can wait.

  • Last time I got some of the bigger items at my shower so I waited to buy most of the items afterwards. This time I've been keeping an eye out for deals and picking things up as I go along.  I don't remember a lot of deals on baby items around the holidays (last time I had a Christmas baby). I have seen some items on amazon temporarily drop in price below what I would save with a registry completion.

Right now I'm trying to figure out when I should buy my car seat. There is a $25 rebate that I would like to take advantage of.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I'm not having a shower so I've just been buying items throughout this pregnancy.

  • FTM here too. I'm thinking that if I find a great deal on something I know I'll need or really want, I'll go ahead and get it. Then if someone gifts it to me I can return one of them and exchange for other things I might not have received. I know it can be a pain to return and go through that process, especially with a new LO, but sometimes it's worth it. Or I can send my family on an exchange run if they start driving me nuts while they're staying with us ;)
  • When I was a FTM, I waited until after my shower to purchase anything myself.

MiL is a crazy hoarder and left somewhere close to 6 of those 31 gallon rubbermaid storage bins on my front porch during the course of my pregnancy with DD1...  It sounds great, but half of them were covered in mice poop and then about a fourth of them were stained beyond my preferences for wear (I know babies spit up and poop and stain stuff, but there's a limit to what I'm willing to deal with when accepting second hand stuff when I could easily afford to look myself at thrift or regular stores), and then the other 4th of them were fine...

This time around, I did buy DD2's coming home outfit, but with about 8 weeks between the girls' birthdays, I'm banking on quite a bit of DD1's stuff covering it.

Also, random, but this thread title made me think of this:

Anyone else suffer through this educational "game" like I did?  lol.

(Sorry, I'm just all over today with thoughts...)

  • Personal preference. I'd say normal is about 20 weeks on. If you think someone will purchase the large/furniture items for your shower, you may want to wait. Since this is our third, I'm slowing getting the bigger items and am not expecting anything big for shower gifts. I'm having a hard time not just getting it all at once. Baby fever really hit a few weeks ago and all I've wanted to do since is buy or make baby items. Holding my friend's month only baby last week didn't help. lol
  • I will be doing most of it last minute after xmas. I hate not being prepared but with 3 girls bdays and then xmas its going to have to wait. my biggest concern will be the car seat as he cant leave the hospital without that so that will be what I buy next
  • If I were having a baby shower then I'd wait till after. Mainly because of the chance of getting cash/gift cards or the big ticket items. But I'm a STM. Not having a baby shower. My mom is going to buy us the crib. Then we just have the dresser and chair to buy. And we will probably buy them closer to Christmas.
