Gaggy kid

So my daughter is super gaggy. We are trying to advance her feeding past stage 2 foods and she gags on everything to the point of vomiting everything up. I don't know what to do. She doesn't like certain textures and most flavors that are not sweet. She loves her cereals, fruits, yogurts, yogurt melts and star puffs only. Has anyone had trouble like this with their kids? I'm not sure where to go with food at this point.
She is 80% in weight so she's not lacking. I'm a first time mom so I'm just trying to figure all this out.

  • W is the same way. Anything solid besides his puffs he just sticks his tongue out and doesn't know what to do with it. If it does get further than that he gags immediately! Pedi said not to worry and just keep trying!

  • Julia is the same way.  I joked with DH last night that I think we will be sending her off to college with jars of baby food!  She eats her puffs just fine but anything else that we try to give her, she just rolls it around her mouth and then gags if she actually even attempts to swallow it.  The other thing with her is that she plays with any table food we put in front of her rather than try to put it in her mouth.  That's very frustrating since she will crawl along the floor and put every spec of dirt or mess in her mouth.  But not food.

  • We had this problem with LO until about a month ago. He gagged whenever he had non-pureed food. We've had good luck with the mashed food, especially carrots and sweet potatoes. Our PT said to try mashed so he could strengthen his muscles. We also have more luck letting him feed himself the mashed foods versus spooning it into his mouth. After a few weeks of that, he's been able to move on to most foods.

  • Well thanks for all your replies. I'm at a loss with her. We stepped it back down today after she vomited again this morning with one bite of cereal with stage 3 fruits. It's frustrating but we'll keep at it. Glad to know that not everyone's kids are feeding themselves table food already at this age.
