Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

sleep help

My 18 month old has recently stopped napping.  He used to nap for 2-3 hours.  Lately I'm lucky to get 45 minutes--I'm not even sure if he's actually sleeping then he's just being quiet.  He has also started waking up in the middle of the night.  The other night I was up with him at 11:30, 4:30 and 6:45.  He usually doesn't wake up until 7:30.  He was always a pretty good sleeper until now.  I'm at my wits end--I've tried letting him crying it, going into his room and laying him back down in his crib, putting him down earlier, putting him down later, giving him tylenol in case his gums were hurting.  What else can I try?  I need him to start sleeping again soon.

Re: sleep help

  • Our LO is a but younger but one of her comforts has been her sleep sack i think. Its a zippy brand and she can move freely but she feels like she has a blanket on her. Not sure if he sleeps in one but its seriously been good for her. Maybe he is teething? Hope it gets better!

  • It's pretty common for toddlers to go through an 18 month sleep regression.  I think it lasted about 2 weeks with DD.  I can't remember with DS but we also moved during that time.

It sounds like you are trying a lot of things but nothing consistently.  Honestly, sometimes all you can do is be there when they need and the phase will pass.  With DD we spent longer holding her before bed each night and then it slowly diminished with each night.  Then we had to get up with her once and held her longer.  Sometimes she came to our bed and sometimes not.  I napped with her almost every day while she was going through it.  Then she went back to sleeping normally on her own.
