Play area vs. Nursery

We're in the process of moving into a home (yay!). We have been moving / staying in different locations for a few months now while transitioning from North Carolina to Alabama. Since we left our old place, Warren has become very mobile.

In your home, do you keep all of baby's toys in his/her room? Or do you keep the nursery mostly for sleeping, and have a designated area in the house to play during the day? Example: like a baby-gated part of the living room with that foamy puzzle piece stuff on the floor, etc etc...

Re: Play area vs. Nursery

  • We have a few quiet toys in his room that he plays with during our nighttime routine. The rest are spread between the living room and the bonus room. We don't have either gated off because we don't really have too much he could get into at this point.

  • Right now pretty much all of DDs toys are in the living room or dining room/kitchen. We just don't really spend much time in her room unless it's napping or bedtime. My plan is to continue having most of her toys on the main floor where she can play while I do other things while she's still so little.

For those keeping toys in main living areas how are you handling storage? For now I have a very inexpensive ottoman/trunk thing that most of her stuff fits in but I think I'm going to need something else after Christmas and her birthday.
  • All of DD's toys are in the living room. I have a toy bin I throw them in at the end of the day. Her room is on another floor and just not convient for playing. I would love to have a bigger house someday with a room that we could convert to a play room.
  • We have a small open concept house with dd's room off the kitchen(not ideal for naps!). She has a small ball pit toy and some stuffies in her room. Mostly so I have somewhere to set her while I wash my hands after diaper changes (kid poops 4x a day). We have the rest of her toys in a round basket she can tip without hurting herself. It's centrally located so I can see her from almost anywhere on the main floor.

  • His room is for sleeping. I do have an exersaucer in there that I will put him in if I need to be in his room to clean or put away laundry and need him to stay happy.  It's pretty rare that he goes into that, maybe 10 minutes once or twice a week.
We have an Ikea storage shelf in our living room that has 8 boxes in it, so we categorize the toys into specific boxes (helps my nearly 4y old help tidy up).
We don't spend much time in the bedroom, so I wouldn't see much point in keeping lots of toys in there.

  • Next to no toys in the bedroom - just some books and stuffed animals.  All the toys are in the living room.

Same here. All the rooms are upstairs, and it's much easier to have them downstairs in the living room with me. I have toys for both my 4 year old and DD (9 months) downstairs in this https://m.target.com/p/kidkraft-austin-toy-box/-/A-12170314?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=google_pla_df&LNM=12170314&CPNG=Baby&kpid=12170314&LID=9pgs&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=12170314&kpid=12170314&gclid=CNi3_a7CrMECFYZaMgodbFMAjg

It keeps everything out of sight!
  • We have a shelving unit in the living room that has a shelf for DD's books, a shelf for knob puzzles, and a couple of bins of toys.  In the living room we also have her 2 stand up toys against a wall for her to play with and I have a bin on the floor that I change out each week (this week it is filled with musical instruments, last week was all yellow toys, etc.).

In her room I have a little crate of books and a crate of stuffed animals.  I also have a couple of maracas and a c.d. player.  We sometimes listen to Spanish cd's and shake the maracas in her room.  Otherwise, we don't really play in there.

this exactly.  I also have a small tub of plastic measuring cups, spoons, cookie cutters, etc for her to play with in the kitchen while I cook.  she gets pissed if I confine her while I'm cooking, but this keeps her out of the cupboards and pantry.  usually.
  • We keep all his toys in the family room (which my H hates) but I find it easier to watch him when he is in there as as oppose to his room which is on the second floor
  • In DS's room we keep a basket of his toys that are specifically his (lovie, teethers, etc) and the talking farm. In DD's room we keep a lot of toys and books. Toys in her room are just stuffed animals, dolls, Little People and Mega Blocks.

All other toys get kept in the playroom. We have the toybox in there that is full of both of their toys. We also keep the rest of the books (I think we have enough for a small library), slide, kitchen set, pop up tent, ball pit, more dolls, dress up stuff and ride on toys. Pretty much all big toys go in the playroom and smaller ones go in their bedrooms.

We converted our office into a playroom. Neither of the kids have toys in their rooms.

  • We keep books and stuffed animals in his room for when I need to put up laundry etc. All of the noise making/push around toys are downstairs.

I live in Alabama! What part of the state did you move to??

  • We have mostly just books and a few blocks in DDs room, the rest of her toys are in our living room that we took the coffee table out of and put a gate up to the kitchen
  • We live in Baldwin County (Spanish Fort), about an hour west of Pensacola, 20 mins from Mobile, etc…
  • You guys have helped me keep it real- I was thinking off all these decorating ideas for our new living room, but if I'm honest with myself, me and Baby are going to be in there every dang day playing our little hearts out.  Baby-safe house here I come.

  • We have his toys in the living room and his playroom (which will be more useful when he's a bit older and can play kind of by himself) and only two or three toys in his nursery in case I need to shower (I put him in the crib with some toys) or if I'm putting laundry away in his room.
