Babies: 0 - 3 Months

takes an hour or so to fall asleep after feed

After DD's last feeding of the evening it takes her a good hour or so to really pass out. She will drift off and then spring awake and seem to go in and out of this. If we hold her she doses off the best. She also does this after her early morning feed. I thought a lot of babies passéd out after eating. Could this be something that changes over time. I just think its a lot to wait an hour for her to fall asleep if its a continuos thing, esp. when everyone else in the house is ready for bad.

Re: takes an hour or so to fall asleep after feed

  • Read up on baby sleep cycles... you will find that it takes at least 20 mins for them to get to a "deep sleep" phase. Sounds like your LO is drifting in and out before finally reaching that point.

  • Our LO was the same way. We started swaddling him and putting him in his swing a he was out within 15 minutes or so, then we brought him up. We've stopped that routine finally. For the last month and half though we try to keep him up as much as possible once I pick him up from the sitter (6pm), then his last bottle is at 9pm, and we warm that one up. He is usually asleep by the time he finishes it. Give him a few pats to burp then take him up and he's out for the night. Swaddling was the key for us for a long time. We stopped about 3 weeks ago and haven't had any issues thank goodness.
