Donating BM

I know this may be a touchy subject for some but I am looking for suggestions/expierence whatever it may be. I am very blessed and have TONS of extra milk in my deep freeze. The oldest I have is June. LO goes to daycare AT MOST 3 days a week and I send half fresh half frozen bottles every time. The only time he has all frozen milk bottles is when we go out and he stays over at the grandparents house. Has anyone had any expierence with donating excess milk? I don't want it to go to waste and I've already cut down to only pumping 4x per day and I am still freezing approx 20oz per day on days that I am home and approx 30oz per day on days that I work. I don't even know where to start when it comes to donating. I work at a hospital and have browsed the internet there to see if they accept donated milk and I can't come up with anything. So.....give me your suggestions what to do and where to start!!??

Re: Donating BM

  • If you don't want to go through the screening process you could also donate to Eats on Feets or Human Milk for Human Babies. Both have Facebook groups.

  • WOW 30 oz!!!  ^:)^ and I thought I had something at 20oz!!! I know I had an excess (at one time) and I keyworded on google the city breast milk donation and I had a lot of options. i know they are picky how they get the frozen milk. Good luck and that's totally awesome you can do 30!!!

  • I am in the same boat as you.  When I realized that my supply was huge, I contacted the hospital I delivered at.  It is a lengthy process (phone interview, face to face interview, blood work, signatures from OB and pediatrician) that I did not want to deal with.  And the minimum donation is 200 ounces at a time and I'm not comfortable donating quite that much at once (in case my supply was to tank).  So instead I have donated to my local la leche league.  I am part of the group on facebook and just post a message when my deep freezer is overflowing.
  • @fish8412 : is the FB group just called la leche league or how would I search that?

I looked into donating because my dairy consumption (I tried to cut it, kept forgetting) was bothering LO's tummy at first.  I didn't want to quit pumping just in case she could drink it again someday (she can now) but looked into donating in case she wouldn't.

I only checked with one place, I can't remember the name, but there were a lot of stipulations, of course since the milk usually goes to babies in the NICU.  I know there are certain medications you couldn't be on, there was a certain way to handle the milk when freezing and I believe it also mentioned that you needed to either shower or at least wash your breasts before pumping.

When LO was a newborn I know there were several days on end that I didn't shower, soooo I'm going to guess I probably didn't meet the requirements, especially since I've been on Zoloft since LO was born and I am quite sure that was one of the no no meds.

ETA: Good luck with your search, that's great that you're able to donate!

That's nice to know about zoloft because I am on that as well... I have a nephew who is 7wks older then my LO and my sister struggles some days with producing and is barely getting by. maybe I should just give her what I can so she can make her goal of a year without stressing. I just don't want my hard work to go to waste!

The group I am in is called la leche league of _______  (the area that I live in).   If you can't find your local group, then ask the hospital you delivered in for contact info.  Let me know if you need more help and I will ask someone in my local group.  :)
  • I donate to my birth center or moms from my birth center.  I looked into human milk 4 human babies, but there was a scammer on my state's page and it made me nervous that people could just be trying to get bm so they didn't have to pay for formula.  I don't pump a lot because I stay at home, but I have donated around 400oz total.
