AFP screening anyone?

My OB wants me to get the AFP blood test to screen for spina bifida at my 16w appointment.  There is a chance my folic acid levels were low at the time of spinal development due to me having had weight loss surgery.  My vitamin labs all came back normal, but there's always a chance that things were off a month prior to that when baby was forming those parts.

I've read that this test can give lots of false positives - which worries me about them wanting to do invasive testing that I'm not Ok with.

Anyone do this yet?  Did it for a prior pregnancy?

(NT results were great - no worries about the trisomy results)

Re: AFP screening anyone?

  • I'm doing one. It's just bloodwork right? If it comes back odd I'll just deal with it then. Mine is monday.

  • Yes - it is just a blood test.

  • I did the combined test, can't remember correct name. Blood work, scan and blood work next week.

Same. And OP, it's not invasive, it's just a blood test.

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

read my post, I know it is NOT invasive.  The invasive testing they'd want do after a false positive is what worries me.

  • Per my OB if it comes back positive there's another blood test they can run. His words were they almost never do amnio anymore, so there appears to be other options.

  • I'm having this blood test done today, as well as the cystic fibrosis carrier test. I didn't realize there were a lot of false positives with it. I probably would not opt for an amniocentesis even if they said I had an elevated chance, I would probably opt for another blood test like scarlettoflaherty said and then just research the defects, find local specialists, and prepare for the possibility of having a child with a defect. Then you're prepared either way, you don't have to risk pregnancy loss with an amnio, and if baby is born healthy, great! It doesn't hurt to have been prepared either way, that's my philosophy .

Me-24~~ DH-25~~Married 6/15/2013~~Pregnant with our first due April 2, 2015~ Septate/ Bicornuate/Arcuate /some kind of not-normal uterus- won't know for sure which one till after babe is born~~Hoping for a full term baby!

  • Fwiw, I had amnio today and it was not problematic or scary and I have had zero post-procedure issues (cramping, spotting etc). (I was scared beforehand of course!) My doctor said that the stats on miscarriage rates that are thrown around are from a study done in the 70's when they were sticking the needle in blind rather than guided by sonogram, which is how it's done now. Not pushing anyone to do an unnecessary amnio, but if you do need to have one done or have good reason to have one, it is not nearly as scary as the interwebz makes it seem. Here's one helpful article: https://www.parents.com/pregnancy/stages/amniocentesis/risk-of-miscarriage-from-amnio-low/
