Have you introduced nuts yet?

I want to introduce peanut butter fairly soon with LO, but I'm really nervous. So far he hasn't had a reaction to anything, other than an occasional diaper rash, and DS1 doesn't have a problem with nuts. I am allergic to some nuts, although not peanuts.

If you introduced peanuts/peanut butter already, what time of day did you do it? Did you have Benadryl on hand? Has anyone had a bad reaction with their LO and nuts yet? For some reason, this just has me so stressed.

  • Yep, he eats peanut butter. I honestly didn't think much about it. Just figured we would know soon enough if he was allergic and would deal with it then.

  • I've done peanut butter on toast for breakfast. Neither of us have any allergies though.
  • Yup. Both peanut butter and almond milk (in a smoothie). I gave it early in the day and started small. I figured I'd rather start out early and find out quickly if she's allergic. But I thought it was unlikely.

DS1 is allergic to peanuts so to be on the safe side we rubbed a peanut on LOs arm to see what would happen.  The spot got a little red so we decided to hold off until we can get him allergy tested at his 1yr appt.

Point of the story - you can try rubbing a peanut/peanut butter on LO to see if they react.  And if they spit it out after the first bite, don't push it.  It might make their tongue tingly as part of an allergic reaction with no other symptoms (DS1 has this).

    That's good to know. Thanks!

  • The only allergy in our family at all is my uncle to scallops so we have been minimally concerned for anything. LO just had peanut butter for the first time this weekend. I spread it thin on pancakes, early in the day and shortly after waking, so there wouldn't be a reaction while asleep. She inhaled it. No reaction so she had PB sandwich on an English muffin at daycare this week. I think if you are concerned, rubbing it on the skin as PP said is a great idea.

  • We give DD peanut butter/almond butter toast for breakfast a few days per week. She loves it and hasn't had any issues. We've also done eggs and shellfish. She eats everything.

  • Our DD tried peanut butter for the first time around 6.5 months on toast. She's also had other nuts (almond milk, coconut) as well as other allergens. If it's a higher risk food, I gave it in the morning and had benedryl on hand for my sanity. We have no family hx of allergies.
  • I do peanut butter on ritz crackers and LO loves it. I guess I didn't really give it any thought and had no Benadryl on hand. Luckily we haven't experienced any reactions to it.
