Another Baby Item question....Rock and Play/Swing?

FTM here so sorry if this seems obvious...I was looking at what was recommended for the registry and I saw everyone loves the rock and play

Like this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=23059236&cp=&parentPage=search

I also saw a swing is recommended, like this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=19346226&cp=2255957.2273443.2255983.3224660&parentPage=family

Have you used both?! They just seem so similar, obviously the one doesn't swing but I don't want to register for both if I don't really need too.

Also....how early does the baby use an activity chair/jumper??: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=29508306&fromRegistryNumber=54789832&product_skn=271893

So confusing...........Thanks for any input! :)

THe main difference in the RNP and swing that you posted, is that the swing goes side to side and back and forth. Whereas the RNP only goes back and forth. Swings also usually have music and vibration.

Back in the day (3 years ago.. lol) RNP's didn't have the battery powered option and you had to rock it yourself (PITA at 1AM!).

EDIT: I lie, they still don't rock themselves - get both!! LOL

So that said, you could probably get away with one or the other.

DS started using his jumperoo around 5 months.

  • RNP is great. DS slept in it for 2 months when we brought him home. It's easy to move around the house, take to Grandma's and even use when taking a shower. I would just pull it in the bathroom with me. Couldn't live without it.

The swing is also good. DS didn't love it, but others I know wouldn't live without it. It moves on it's own, which the old RNP didn't. Also good for naps, but I wouldn't use it overnight.

The jumper can be used once LO can hold up their head. Around 3-4 months till around 6-7 months. They are pricey and you don't use it for long, but it is very nice to have. I would suggest a used one if possible.

We were very lucky to get all 3 of these things from SIL so we didn't have to buy them. For us the least useful was the swing, but every baby is different.

The swing was our favourite thing. MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE THAT PLUGS IN! You don't want batteries dying.

This is what we have and it is freaking awesome because the swing seat is removable. Ella slept in the removable swing seat right beside our bed for a few weeks when she was brand new and did not like to sleep completely horizontal. The music it plays is very soothing and lovely, also. :)

ETA: we did not have a RNP. I felt that since the swing seat was removable, we didn't need one.

  • We had both the RNP and the swing and used them both. DD slept in the RNP until she was 4 months. I loved it because it was easy to tote around the house while she was in it.

We started the exersaucer at 4ish months, when she was holding her head up and had good back control.

  • Thank you so much!!! VERY HELPFUL! :):)
  • This is the swing we are doing I like the fact that the seat is detachable and it can be a rocker bouncy chair.  Kinda kills 2 birds with one stone.

I figured it was a hybrid between a swing and the rnp. It plugs in too.
  • DS slept in the RNP until he was 6 months.  That thing was a lifesaver!  He was not such a fan of the swing, we could definitely have lived without it.  But I agree that if you get one, you need one that plugs in.

DS absolutely looooooooved his jumperoo.  We used it daily from the time he was 4 months until he was probably 10-11 months and then occasionally after that.  He didn't love it as much once he was mobile and was in it for shorter periods of time at that point.  But it was really nice for me to be able to put him in it while I was making dinner or something and know that he was contained and could play with all the toys for a while.
