Bariatric Surgery Vets? Anyone?

So, I had a bariatric procedure (a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) in 2011. I am very comfortable with how it went (I lost 70 lbs, though I gained a bit back.)  I'm healthy overall, and I have wonderful doctors who have worked a lot with people with tiny stomachs (as I call mine.)  There's some concern about vitamin stuff and some that I won't gain enough weight, but my current issue is just that I'm not hungry enough! I try to eat whenever I'm hungry but my stomach takes so long to process even a small volume of food that I often find my blood pressure dropping or feeling dizzy or dehydrated...even when I can't fit anything else into my stomach. It makes me feel like a failure at baby-making (although my anxiety is clearly a whole other issue I'm not dumping on you lovely people.)

Anyone else had some kind of bariatric surgery, and if so, what are you experiencing? My apologies if this thread already exists--I looked a bit back but didn't see it.

Edited because I apparently forget verb tense.

  • If you use the search function there is a post titled "Any moms that had bariatric surgery prior to getting pregnant"

Sorry I can't copy links on mobile. Hope this helps :)

  • I have lap band. Make sure you keep up with your water. That's very important. Don't feel like a failure at all. Many women have been pregnant with the sleeve and band. I would suggest doing small snacks all day. Protein is very important to us and as well as baby. I have been drinking the cost co premier protein shakes in the morning. They have 30grams of protein. Do they have a nutritionist at your sleeve dr's office? If so I would let her know about the blood pressure and as well as your Ob. You have to get that under control. For sure try small healthy snacks all day.
  • There's a few of us here.

I had the VSG in march of this year, so I am only 7m post op now.

As far as vitamins go - my levels will be checked every trimester and so far I am in normal range.

For food - if you are staying full longer than you'd like - try some wetter foods that will pass through the pylorus valve faster.  greek yogurt, cottage cheese, refried beans with salsa...those are still good protein options that will pass through faster than dense meats will.

I am getting about 1500 calories a day now but focusing on wetter proteins for B, L, and snacks, then I have my meat-based meal for dinner.  I have also added more carbs back in b/c it helps with my nausea.

I continue to lose 1-2 pound a week now, but my docs aren't concerned b/c the baby is growing well and I am not vitamin deficient.

Also - to get in more fluids I do drink before my meals and only wait 10 minutes to eat (instead of the suggested 30).  I still wait to drink at least 30min after a meal, but by loosrning the rules for pre-meal hydration, I get a little more water in each day now.

(I've had aversion problems with fluids - weird I know)

  • No, aversion with fluids makes total sense to me! Thanks, everyone, for your input. I am feeling better and more like this is possibly going to be ok.
