16 month old speech regression?

Has anyone experienced this? My son will be 16 months in a few days and is not saying any words at all. His receptive language is great but he only communicates by pointing. He does babble to himself but not much to me. At his 15 month appointment the doctor asked if he had about 5-10 words (which seemed a little advanced to me) but at the time he did. He had about 5 regular words that he used daily and a few other words that we would hear once or twice. For the past three weeks he has only said one of his words (cheese) one time, other than that it's been nothing.

 I know that slower speech development is typical with boys and he is also an only child that stays at home with me so his exposure to other children talking is minimal, but I guess the one thing that seems concerning is that he was talking and now has stopped. Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm actually really not a worrier, but my husband is and it can be contagious.  He actually has done something similar before where he was starting to say a few things around a year and then stopped for a few months while he was working on a walking.  I guess the reason I got more concerned this time is that he is really saying nothing right now.  

    I had actually called our pedi this morning and was waiting for the call back when I wrote this post. She does want to see him next week just to be safe rather then waiting until 18 months.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks again!

    We are going through the same thing with our 16 month old. He has stopped saying certain words and has minimized the amount he mimics us. Boxer mommy, how is your LO doing?

    I would keep a very close eye on this.  I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but regression is a red flag.  If he continues for very long not saying any other words, I would discuss with your pediatrician.  You can also self refer to early childhood intervention for an evaluation.  Evals if not free are very low cost (it varies by state).
