Clogged duct

all of the sudden I have a very painful clogged duct :( I'm pretty sure I have a milk blister as well. It hurts to nurse on that side but I still am. Any other tips to help?

Re: Clogged duct

  • I've got a clogged duct as well. It sucks. I googled and searched this board for tips. This is what I found: frequent nursing on affected side. Heat (heating pad, hot shower, hot bath). Massage affected area.

I used a heating pad then nursed right away while massaging. Feels a lot better already.

  • I had to stop pumping because of getting clogged ducts. Lots of heat before nursing and then an ice pack after to make the swelling go down. I also did a lot of massaging the area during feeding. My doctor also said to take Advil because it would help with inflammation. I read somewhere to put cabbage leaves on the area but I never tried it. Good luck and I hope you feel better!!!

  • @stoofewok I'll have to try to maneuver that! I remember positioning helped a great deal when my milk first came in and I was super engorged. It's the added milk blister that is seriously making me miserable because it hurts a lot when DS nurses. I had a clogged duct w DS! once and it wasn't this bad

  • This is going to sound strange but was very helpful when I tried! Fill a bowl with warm water and Epsom salts then you kind of hang over the bowl with your boob in the water. You can then massage and try to hand express some milk into the bowl. It worked for me when I had a few clogged ducts and a bad round of mastitis!

  • Thanks for all the tips!! I tried the Epsom salts, warm compress and nursing in weird positions and I think it's gone! Phew. The blister might still be there but hopefully it goes away soon

  • I've gotten this twice. I massaged the knot before, during, and after I pumped that breast completely empty. Did it again three hours later. Worked great!

  • Put baby on the ground on their back. Get on all fours and lean over baby with your boob hanging down. Position your body so that baby's chin is lined up with the clogged duct. Have baby nurse like that (helps if they are super hungry and suck harder) while you massage the lump, starting at the very back of your boob. This usually works!
  • Glad your clogged duct got better! I massage mine while pumping and make sure LO nurses on that side as well (more action for infected area). Really bad clogged ducts gets the "hang in bowl of hot water" treatment. Breast feeding is hard! I was getting the hang of things the past month and then BAM, engorged tits and clogged ducts all weekend. I was such a cranky B on Saturday !

  • Like @arcarpe2‌, I get clogged ducts every time I pump. Why?!?

Anyway, I agree with @stoofewok‌ that it helps to line baby's chin up with area of clogged ducts. If you massage from the outside in (preferably while baby is on), that might help too. Also, if you pinch your nipple and roll it between your fingers, that will release if the clog is in the nipple. It's really painful, and I imagine it would be even more painful with a blister, but I have to do it every time.
