Baby's weight at birth?

Ok STMs - please put my mind at ease! DH was an 11 lb baby. Everyone who knows this looks at me with an "ohhh boy" type look on their face. All of my MILs boys (4 of them) were 10 and 11 lbs. I didn't think it was at all related to my pregnancy but ... is it? What's your experiences?! Am I giving birth to a turkey!? Lol ;)

Re: Baby's weight at birth?

  • My mom had all 9+ lb babies (5 of 'em).  My older sister had two 9+ lb babies (and one in the 8lb range).  My daughter was 7lbs 11oz and I was measuring a week ahead (not that the measurements are terribly accurate, but I was terrified of a huge baby.)  In my experience, it really depends on the pregnancy.

  • My brother and I were upper 7lbs. My first was 8lbs and my second was 6'12". I don't know if pregnancy dictates size.
    Fucking bump!!!!

I asked my OB at 35ish weeks whether I was having a monster baby. Lol. DH was the smallest of three at 10 pounds and I was the smallest of three at 8 lbs. She reassured me I wasn't and sure enough DD was 6 lbs 15 oz. Everyone's going to be different but my experience says that family history doesn't mean everything! Good luck!

Eta - DD was also 8 days overdue so full term.

  • It's always possible...for whatever reason everyone kept telling me that I was going to a have a huge baby because DH was 10.5 pounds but my doctor had never said a word about an oversized baby. Even in the delivery room they kept saying DD was big baby and brought in extra nurses for labor. DD was 6lbs 12oz.

  • She may have had undiagnosed GD. That's what happened to DHs aunt. Everyone kept telling me I was going to have a 6lb baby, DS was 7lb 12oz. My SIL was consistently told she'd have a 9+ baby bc she was sooooo big. None of her babies have come close to 7lbs at birth.

So don't worry about it. It's just a number, like your due date.

  • My MIL had large babies and DS was 8 lbs 1 oz at 40w6d, so you're not doomed!

  • My sister has 3 girls and each weighed smaller than the one before. Like everyone else says, it will vary with each person/pregnancy. When you are closer to you due date ask doc to guess approx size if you are worried (will not be exact but will give you an idea). My daughter was 8.9 so yes I would like a smaller baby this time :)
  • From what I understand, babies usually mimick the mother-- and most of the time the baby won't get bigger than what a mother can carry.

My husband was just under 12 lbs at birth.  I know, right?  At 5'2 and 120 (pre baby) lbs, I was scared to death.  I think I was 7lbs 10oz.  But our little monster was a full term peanut at 6lbs 14oz.

They thought my first was going to be preemie size, I almost shit when they held up an 8lb 21 inch long baby. They were making bets on how big he was. My second they said he was going to be big but he was 6'12", one push and he was out. Caught everyone off guard.

  • My husband was 7 something and I was 6lb 13oz. My son was 8lb 9oz.

My best friend was scared to death because her husband was 12 pounds and she is teeny. Her son ended up being 8lb 3oz and that was with GD. I think you'll be fine!

  • My husband was a 9 lb baby, I was 6 and a half. DD was full term at 39 weeks, but really little, only 5 and a half lbs. A peanut.

Honestly, I hope this one is a little bit bigger so I don't have to worry so much about weight.

  • It varies. Everyone thought DS would be a monster even the OB said "at least I don't have to worry about his size" when I had pre e and went into labor at 35 weeks. He was 5lbs6oz and 19in. Don't stress on it. My aunt is 5'2" and was a whopping 105lbs when she had my 14lb cousin.

  • It's always possible don't let it stress you out.

The head size is actually the part you worry about for baby size when it comes to labor and delivery. In most cases a bigger baby can be delivered vaginally with little or no problems. I have two friends who had 10lb babies and gave birth with no issue. I have a friend who had a 7.12lb baby and had to have an emergency section because the babies head was massive (in comparison to her pelvic bone and baby's weight). So you never know!

  • I was an 8.8lb baby, DH was an 8lb baby, DS was 7lbs 13oz.

Fwiw, my older brother was a 9.5lb baby, and his son wound up a 7 lb baby.
  • I was a 10lb 7oz baby and SO was 9 something. I measured a week ahead the whole time and was huge! I thought for sure I would have a 9-10lb baby. DS was 8lbs at 39 weeks.

  • My inlaws loved to shared horror stories of dh's giant baby head and the c section that he cause.  Way to terrify a first time mom.  Anyway.....both of my babies had my very small head.

  • DH and I were both close to 9 pounds and DD was 7 pounds 1 oz.  However, she was 3 weeks early, so I have no idea what she would've been had she gone full term.

  • My MILs babies were all different but my DH weighed 6.5 pounds I weighed 7.5 and my son weighed 6.14 (a week overdue.) I think your size at birth and DH size at birth play a part. Of course things like gestational diabetes can cause larger babies and pre mature birth causing smaller birth weight but getetics determins the size, I think. :)
  • I had a 9.2 pounder!!! And I was 10.3 lbs! So I think it does run in the family! And we are not very big people.. just big babes.

  • I was 9.2 and MIL had two big babies (not  my husband though because she scheduled a c-section early so she could be healed in time for a New Year's Cruise...she's a special one).  My girls were 8.4 and 8.14, and with the first I was a sedentary eating machine.  And, I am 6" taller than my mom, so I "should" have had bigger babies than her. And DH is 3" taller than my dad.... I feel like there is a connection between parent birth weights and their offsprings', but that it isn't too strong.

  • I don't think any one truly knows how big a baby is going to be until it arrives. With both of my sons my ob's tried to get me to do c section because they were sure my sons were going to be more then 10 lbs. both my boys were 6 lbs 14 oz 22"long natural birth. You just have to go what you feel is right and go with it.
  • I was 5.14 lbs at birth and I was 2 days late. My husband.. I have no clue because his mom isn't alive and his dad doesn't know a damn thing. But our daughter was 8.3 lbs. I didn't eat very well when I was pregnant with her because healthy food disgusted me which is sad so I think that contributed. But she is a great and healthy weight now. :)
