Any advice for FTMs?

Hi fellow Oct mommies! I'm 39 weeks & 1 day (team blue) & getting more anxious by the day. I'm a FTM so I have no idea what to expect aside from all the stuff I've read. Please share any tips that I may find helpful during labor. Thanks!

Re: Any advice for FTMs?

  • Bring a magazine and a deck of cards. My labors took FOREVER and it helped to take my mind off of things.

Many of us are also FTMs...  I always think it's interesting when people post here appealing to the non-FTMs.

  • I would look around -- there is lots of great advice here. Your question is so vague that you probably won't get many responses or even what you are looking for. Try searching for what you are wondering about - hospital bag, meals etc.

    Good luck

  • I always assume they don't have mom friends in real life and take pity on them. I was really young when I had my first and the people I knew IRL were no help. But I just read a bunch of books and Parenting magazine and lurked in mom message boards back then.

  • I'm a FTM too but the one thing I would do different if I could is not worry too much about the hospital bag. I did bring my own pj's which was great and I used those. I also used the soap and shampoo I brought although the hospital provided that too. Oh and a pillow and iPad. Other than that though I didn't really use anything else I packed. I had a c-section though and was in a lot of pain so didn't get up much.

Oh one thing I wish I did have when I got home was high cut underwear. My parents had to go buy me some today,  bikini underwear lays right on the incision which is not good.

Also while on the hospital I did have the nurses take LO to the nursery two times between feelings so DH and  I could sleep.  I was so afraid after she spit up lying down twice that she would choke to death I couldn't sleep at all. The two hours both times made a world of difference.  I was in the hospital for 4 days.
  • I found bringing my iPod was very relaxing or even a book on tape during delivery.

Also try to walk around as much as possible to get through contractions

People will want to visit so depending on what you want just realize if you plan to breastfeed the nurse will be waking you up at night so sleep while you can!
  • I don't know exactly what you are looking for so I'll give you some advice but if you are looking for something more specific let us know.

Be flexible with labor. You never know exactly how things are going to go, so kind of go with the flow.

I took some board games and those were fun while waiting around.

Granny panties are a must when you get home. I got mine a couple sizes bigger than normal so they covered everything and didn't rub.

You will have bleeding after so stock up on super size pads. Again granny panties are helpful here to hold said giant pads.

Get an epidural! Having an u medicated birth doesn't give you extra mommy points and I was so much happier and could enjoy the experience after having mine. It's heaven!!!
  • Thanks to everyone who provided feedback. I appreciate your time. :)
