Trouble TTC

One more question...

Ok sorry for my second post, but I'd love another opinion. So after this bfn from iui #5, I'm not sure what to do. This our second iui with injections and I just had a lap in August. Part of me feels like we are wasting our money with all of these iuis, but another part of me feels like we should give it one or two more tries. I have stage 2 endo and my husband doesn't have any issues. My RE says that the average number of times for it to work is 4. I'm just so conflicted with it! What would you suggest?

Re: One more question...

  • I'm on my cycle for IUI #5.  I think we are going to try one more cycle of injectables without IUI before my lap in december.  I totally understand the feeling of am I wasting money or is this one going to be the one?  I honestly don't have any advice because I don't know how to stop trying either.  Good Luck with your decision.

  • It would depend on if the IUIs are covered by insurance. If I had coverage, I would do them or if money wasn't an issue. Being as though your husband doesn't have any issues, I wouldn't waste my time with IUIs. Especially since you've done 5 unsuccessfully. Just my opinion. Good luck.

  • Thanks for all of the thoughts. : ) My insurance doesn't cover iuis so I am just starting to think that they are a waste for me. My husband and I talked it over and it looks like for right now the plan is to start saving for ivf and hopefully have a good portion of it by next summer or fall. In the mean time, we will go back to trying on our own (something we haven't done in years) and just enjoying each other. Thanks again! I feel a lot better!
  • I don't think 4 is the average # of tries for IUI to work...in fact, most women don't try past 4 because by the 4th or 5th IUI, chances per cycle drop significantly. Still, for those first 3 or 4 cycles, the chances for each cycle are about equal, so there is little reason to move forward without trying 3 or 4, for most women.

However, as I replied on your other post, you really are starting "anew" after a lap for endo - so I would look at it as the 2nd IUI.

A question though - injects are really expensive and invasive, especially if you have to pay OOP for the meds. Are you on them because oral meds didn't work? If I was on injects, I would probably stop at 3 rather than 4, thinking that the chances of IVF are so much higher, and the costs are not so hugely different?

  • I know you're right about it technically only being my 2nd try. That's definitely a positive way to look at it. The statistic of 4 cycles is just from my RE's numbers with his patients. But, I do completely agree with your thinking. We have done 3 iuis prior to my lap. The first was clomid and then two letrozole cycles. My RE's office gives out free samples of the injections when they are available and I was lucky enough to get all of meds for free both cycles. : )
