Every week it's a new thing. LO has been getting 3 bottles per day from her nanny for the last 5 weeks (when I went back to work). She's 6 months and a week. This past weekend, she became very impatient and started screaming 10 seconds after starting to BF because the letdown wasn't happening right away. It usually takes about a minute, 2 max, of her constant sucking to get the flow going, but she kept popping off and screaming her head off, and for some feedings, I had a hard time getting her to stay on long enough to get it going at all, and had to take a break for an hour. Anyone have this problem, and a solution? I'm back at work today, and she did it this morning, and then only BF'd for 5 min. It's frustrating for both of us!
(Note: For the first 4 weeks I was back at work, her BFing went down to 4 min per session, but last week I got her back to an average of 9 min total for both sides, each session. So that was an necessary accomplishment because she only gained 2 oz last month.)
Re: Impatient baby!
In the meantime, maybe you can try hand expressing a little bit before latching her on so that she gets a little taste of what she's working for. Maybe that will keep her interest long enough to allow letdown. Try some breast compressions as she nurses to keep the flow going and release the fatty hind milk from the duct walls. Switching sides may help too when she gets really frustrated.
