Visiting - low hcg question for y'all

Hi ladies, I wanted to get your experience and honest opinion. This is my fourth pregnancy (no babies). First one suspected ectopic. Next two chemical that didn't last past 19DPO and two betas. Now on my fourth....I did IUI on September 24 and then had a bloodtest 16 days after IUI with a result of 11. Did another hcg today and got the results of 40. My nurse is very concerned and wants me to come back for another draw on Wednesday. When I asked her best case scenario she said it would be to have my body take care of it and miscarry on my own. I asked if there was any chance it was viable and she said not likely given the low numbers that it started with. I haven't had any cramping or spotting. I'm trying to be realistic. Any similar experiences that actually turned out to be a viable pregnancy? Thanks for your time and response!!

  • Hi! I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm also sorry for your previous losses.

I have not experienced low hcg numbers myself, but I've read on here that the doubling time is more important than the number itself. I don't think your nurse should have said that because she really doesn't know what will happen.

Also, hcg numbers can vary a lot, if you look at betabase (just search it and it comes up) you can see the wide ranges of numbers given. I had a very high number at 16dpo (600+) and was nervous it was multiples, so don't read in to it too much on that site. It might be helpful to just see the wide variety of numbers out there. I hope you get good news on Wednesday.

  • As @catlover790‌ mentioned there is a wide range for normal. I hope everything is Ok. T&P to you.
  • My hcg number started at 9--- all that matters is doubling time--- I am not sure I the 40 was 48 hours after the 11 but if so I would see no reason to think it is not a viable pregnancy---
  • I had low HGC in my first 3 pregnancies - all 3 ended soon after the low numbers came up. They were not doubling like they should. This is my 4th pregnancy and they put me in progesterone - seems to have helped since I'm at week 12 and doing well. It's so hard and so frustrating to go through this - I totally know. Don't loose faith you will get positive results soon. Good luck. And I hope your numbers double in your next draw.
  • Perhaps it just implanted later. Your numbers have to start somewhere! Usually If they are doubling that's a good sign. I assume they are going to do another blood draw? If not you should ask for one. A third number might be able to tell you a lot more. I'm sorry you are going through this. I believe there is some hope.

  • Thanks so much ladies for your responses!  I didn't think of doing a search of "low hcgs" until afterwards.  I know there's really no "answer" anyone can provide but getting it out there helps some time pass by.

@Goldie000 - That's what I am thinking as well, that I implanted later, but wasn't sure how that works with IUI's.  I am getting another blood draw tomorrow, so hopefully that gives more clearly to the ambiguity of it all.

@QSB Yes!  You got the dates right.  That was my initial reaction that they numbers had doubled but my nurse was really just going on the fact that they are so low at 16 and 19 days after IUI.

Thanks again ladies!  You have supported my hope!

You mention that implantation could've been later, and that is also a possibility, even with IUI. The IUi helps the sperm get to the egg to fertilize but implantation typically occurs around 7-10 days later. So, you could've been on the 10 or later range. I hope you get good news soon!

Also, and I just thought of this, did you do a trigger shot to time ovulation? Or did you use OPKs to time the IUI? I only ask because even though the IUI was on the 24th, you could've ovulated later unless you did a shot or your RE checked, so I'm curious about how you timed the IUI? GL!

@catlover790 - Thanks for your response. I went in for a US on the 22nd (CD12) and they told me I had about 20 folicles, one of which was "mature" at 21 cm so they told me to do the trigger shot that night and go in for the IUI on the 24th (CD14).  They didn't do an US at that time, just the IUI.  I know O can vary from cycle to cycle, but in the past I have bbt monitored it and have O'd anywhere between CD17 and CD23, so was surprised to see them go ahead with the IUI on CD14.  I know they just need one mature follicle so I guess that's why they went with it.

That makes sense actually; the trigger shot will make you ovulate about 24-36 hours later.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this, but be encouraged that your doubling time seems good! I hope you get good news soon! Getting a bfp after dealing with trouble TTC can be very stressful too. I'll be thinking of you! :)
