Pretty jealous of DH

DHs company just revised their maternity/ paternity leave policy. Starting November 1st all fathers of a new baby get to take a 100% paid 6 week paternity leave! So DH called hr to see if there was anyway he could get it and he can! They also up maternity leave. If I worked there they would have paid me 100% for the 4 weeks before my EDD plus 12 weeks after! That's 4 months! I got 6 weeks paid at 80% and 2 additional using my vaca time.

What did your company give you?

Re: Pretty jealous of DH

  • That is friggin amazing! DH and I didn't get jack shit because we work in the service industry. He only took off one week and left me to it. But I don't have to go back until mid Nov, unless my sanity from staying at home all the time starts to deteriorate (even more) lol.

  • DH got 2 weeks paid paternity leave. I get 12 weeks paid maternity leave and up to 8 weeks unpaid.
  • Nothing. I am taking 12 weeks unpaid. My husband's also gave him nothing. He took some sick and vacation leave to be with me at the hospital (I was there 10 days).

  • That IS amazing and so generous! My husband got one week fully paid. I got 12 weeks. 6 were fully paid through combo of short term disability and my company making up the rest. Then I used paid family leave for 3 weeks and all my sick and vacation time for the remaining three weeks.

That is awesome! More companies should offer that. I was able to do 6 weeks paid through work and another 6 through the state. I know I'm lucky with 12 weeks but I literally worked up until the day I gave birth so that I could have more on the back end, had I had s better option of going out early I would have gladly taken it.

Eta: the state only pays 50% so I did have to take half sick days to get 100% the last 6 weeks.
  • I got 10 weeks paid at 100% and then took 2 weeks of PTO.
  • I got 6 weeks at 100% and worked up until the day before he was born

  • I get 6 weeks at 50% after using all but a week of vacation time and all sick time. I ended up with about 2 weeks completely unpaid. DH gets a week but since he's a teacher and DS was born in August he didn't take it.

  • DH got 2.5 paid. I am taking 8 paid and 8 unpaid. Although I am grateful for my 16 weeks and know I am lucky, I do think the US could stand to improve their laws.
  • My DH got one week paid and took 3 days vacation since she came on a Wednesday. Seemed so short.

I'm a teacher and last year I only had an aide position so I resigned to stay home. I'll be job searching this coming spring/summer. It's been a tough job market for years and about 60% of my gross pay will go to daycare costs. Not looking forward to it.

  • Nothing. I got 8 weeks off with no pay. Only my STD policy (which I pay for).

  • I got 8 weeks paid 100% by my employer and 4 weeks are combo of PTO and unpaid. Company policy allows you to take a longer leave (unpaid) but if I didn't come back for the busy time of year, I think I would lose my job!

  • My job didn't even give me the FMLA paperwork...i delivered early and got shafted since i didn't have the papers to fill out before delivery...

  • I wah now, but my previous company would only pay whatever PTO time you had accumulated. And they would only approve whatever PTO time you had accumulated for your leave. :/ glad I don't work there any more!

  • I took a total of 10 weeks off but 9 of them were saved up general leave from 5 years of never taking a day off. I took one week of LWOP. I went back for a week and a half in the middle to administer state testing to my students. My husband took off two weeks using sick and leave days. Neither of us work for a place that would have paid us they just hold your job for the required 12 weeks.

  • You guys all make me jealous! I had to use all my sick and personal days (leaving none for myself, for LOs dr appts, or if LO gets sick). I had 24 days (just started this job 3 years ago) so it got me 5 weeks (there was a holiday in there). On the other hand, I'm a teacher and DS came 2 weeks before school started so I got that extra time. Had he not been born in summer, that wouldn't have happened. DH saved all his PTO this year and took 4 weeks after I was off (he's half way through that now). My mom will help one week so LO will turn 12 weeks his first week in daycare. I try to count myself lucky for that, but I wish I personally had been with him longer. If any Canadians answer this thread, I may cry. (But I still love ya.)
  • I had 6 weeks of fully paid STD. Then using 2 weeks of vacation/sick time and will take the rest unpaid to get up to my 12 weeks of FMLA. I was required to use any paid time off with the exception of 40 hours before using any unpaid time off, so I'll also have a paid week to take in December. DH took 2 weeks of sick days as his paternity leave.
  • My hospital offers nothing. I used PTO which amounted to about 3 weeks and the remaining 6 weeks I took were unpaid. It was worth it to be broke to get to stay home with LO! I think my husbands company offers 2 weeks paid paternity leave but he only took a few days off with us.
  • @Mrsthompsontobe does your husband work for Apple? That's what my leave is getting changed to next month!

  • Omg, that's amazing! My company has only 11 employees, so there's no formal "policy"in place, but they gave me 4 weeks at 100%, which I didn't expect and was awesome! Then I tacked on 4 weeks vaca

What is it like in Canada?
  • I used 6 wks STD at 50% pay.  It would have been 60% had I been with the company for longer than a year.  My husband used 1 week of PTO.

Nothing. Im taking 12 weeks with saved up PTO and I have short term disability. That's awesome your H gets the full 6 weeks!

This, minus the Short Term Disability - no maternity leave. Thank you US Fed Gov. Just FMLA (12 wks unpaid).

  • I'm taking 12 weeks total, eight weeks paid a certain percent, two weeks of my paid leave, and two weeks leave without pay. H's company offers paternity leave once you been working there 1 year but he has not been there that long- maybe for the next kid. He took off a week at first and has taken
A few days here and there. Any little bit helps!
  • Reading these is making me appreciate my company's policy even more! I get 15 weeks paid, plus up to 10 more weeks unpaid. I'm taking 17 weeks which will be right after Thanksgiving.
  • Federal government here, so nothing. I took off 8 weeks fully paid using sick leave ant PTO. I have 1 week of leave left for Christmas. I have earned some more sick the in case LO gets sick, buy DH can help out there. plus both of us have really flexible work hours and can both work from home so we can work something out in that respect if LO gets sick.
