I bought new nipples and put them in boiling water for 5 minutes (as intlstructed on the box). When I took them out, they were discolored - they looked burnt. They don't smell burnt but I'm wondering... Should I use them or toss them?
Was there sufficient water in the pot? Did the nipples sit on the bottom of the pot (not float freely)?
I've never had this happen so I don't really know -- maybe check the manufactures website and see if they have a history of this happening and what they suggest?
Hmm.. There was plenty of water and to be honest I set the timer and was buzzing about the kitchen so not sure if they floated or say on the bottom. They are Dr Browns and TT... I didn't have this issue with the first set.
Are they doing anything with your water right now? Our town just did the yearly fire hydrant flush and it left our water a bit rusty for a few days so I stopped using tap to make bottles (still cleaned and then rinsed with a bit of filtered water from the fridge). Maybe there was something in the water.
There wasn't anything done with the water recently... H says they're fine to use but I just don't feel right about it. I'll grab some more and try using a newer pot.
That's really weird, I use Dr brown bottles and disinfect the nipples by boiling and I've never seen that happen. There must of been something weird with the nipples and as expensive as bottles and extra nipples are I'd call, maybe you can it least get some coupons out of them.
It might be hard water stains. Try boiling them with water and a bit of vinegar and it should *fingers crossed* remove them. After you've done this make sure to rewash them.
