pain and short cervix

30 weeks. Went in for an u/s yesterday to check placenta position which had been low...it had moved up yay! Told them I've been having pressure and vaginal pain...sometimes I can hardly walk up the stairs it hurts so bad.

They did a transvaginal and found my cervix to be what they called short. They did a cervix swab for preterm labor which came back negative thank goodness! I see my regular ob today....so worried though.

They told me to stay off of my feet....I'm a teacher so that's near impossible....stayed home today I was so nervous. Anyone else going through this or have suggestions/ideas?

Re: pain and short cervix

  • Listen to your doctor.

  • What does qfp mean? I agree...I feel like I should stop teaching now....but they didn't put me on bed rest...so it's iffy I guess. I just want to do everything in my power to get my girl to stay in me!
  • That is such a scam lol!! I'll see what my ob says today. I keep trying to sit at work but I'm up at the board a lot (teach high school chemistry) and have to walk around and answer questions while they are working....I've finally started having the students come to me :-)

  • If your doctor says to stay off your feet, stay off your feet. As other people said, get a note or something, but you can't be working like that.

  • Stay off of your feet. Why is this even being questioned?

    imageBaby Birthday Ticker TickerBabyFruit Ticker

  • Mostly curious if anyone else is going through this or have gone through this and what to expect. And it's vague...stay off of your feet...take it easy....for most means they can still go to work...but for some professions like mine it's not that simple.
  • If you doctor said to stay off your feet you should do just that.  If you have to stop working for a bit he will give you a note.  I hope your cervix stays stable.

  • Did you tell your doctor it's painful? If not you need to do so. Do you know the exact length of your cervix? They gave me progesterone suppositories for mine - they are a pain to put in because I can hardly reach down there these days - I make my husband do it - but have helped a lot with the pain I was feeling down there. Also if it's that short they might also recommend no sex - which is what I am dealing with since week 26. With my situation - I'm not supposed to do any cleaning or go up and down the stairs too often. I would definitely ask for clarification from your dr.

    ***Stuck in the box***

I'm a teacher too and I would be listening to my doctor. When I was in a classroom I taught HS French and Spanish so I understand being at the board. Use your technology, have a student write for you, they LOVE that and then you can sit,and teach. Move your chair every so often to change your room position. I used to sit on desks and chairs next to kids to make them uncomfortable. :)) It's doable if you can't get a doctor's note yet.

  • Just stay off your feet- doesn't your school have an overhead projector? Do people still use those? I remember my teachers sitting at them instead of being at the board alllll the time.

  • I'm having similar problems. "Take it easy" turned into modified bed rest. And my doctor took me out of work during the "take it easy" phase because you can't exactly teach and take it easy. I teach younger students so it may be different for you.
I also have more going on than just my short cervix.

Ask your doctor to write you a note saying you have to go off work. Mine will write a note for $30. Bit of a scam but in your situation I think it makes sense. FWIW, I've started sitting whenever possible at work. I teach from sitting sometimes. My grade four students don't care. My boss understands it's because I'm a moderate risk for toxemia. She brings me a chair every time she sees me standing up haha.
I am sorry, your doctor charges you $30 to write you a letter for work?!? This is a complete scam and could even be illegal. What a douche canoe.
@BankerBSN - My OB office charges $50 to complete FMLA or the maternity/paternity leave paperwork.  But they don't charge for copies of the full chart for travel records... So I will take what I can get

  • Update...went to see my ob...she caught contractions happening and sent me to the hospital. Apparently I have an irritable uterus along with a short cervix. They gave me terbutaline to stop the contractions which worked great for all of a few hours. They discharged me and as soon as I start moving again I get contractions :( I'm not dilated at all so that's great. On strict bed rest for the weekend and going in again Monday to reassess. Took the whole week of of work. Literally if I sit up I have a contraction every time.

I hope that you don't progress further.

Ugh, my doctor charges $30 to fill out FMLA paperwork too.  Sucks!

  • That is with staying off of my feet... I have an irritable uterus apparently. Contractions all the time! :(
  • Did they give you an actual measurement?? I have to go for cervical u/s checks because of a previous surgery. My cervix is "short" but not short enough to be concerned about.

  • @tinymoose I had something similar with my last pregnancy starting around 31 weeks (contractions every 6-12 minutes all day long).  I went to L&D a couple times but I was never dilated so my OB didn't put me on any restrictions.  I was upset at the time that she wasn't taking it seriously but I ended up making it to 37w5d so I guess maybe, just maybe she knew what she was talking about.  I still changed OBs this pregnancy because she was so dismissive last time and I didn't trust that she'd recognize PTL labor if it happened this time.  Glad your OB is taking it seriously.  Take it easy - it is the doctor's orders, after all:)

Dude, I am disgusted. It take literally 2 minutes to complete the paperwork and you pretty much write the same.thing.every.single.time for a pregnant woman.

I would fill out your paperwork for free.

  • Thanks ladies! At another ultrasound appointment now. Fingers crossed that nothing got worse!
  • FX for you and LO!
  • Definitely listen to your doctor. Better to keep that baby in then help some kids with their chemistry ;) nothing scarier than an early baby...
