Sorry i`ve been away from the bump for so long.. alot going on in the past year, a big move across country, living with crazy inlaws. Its finally all settled down and if you all dont mind I would like to come nack and become active again!! But I need some advice. DS is not talking, other than saying mama and dada. He doesnt seem to be making any effort. He is learning two languages so he`s going to be delayed but how delayed it to delayed? Should I be getting help? Adice please

  • Welcome back!! I think if you are worried you should go see your doctor. I'm. It sure if your DS is in daycare or at home with you. For us DS didn't say anything until about 17 months it then he exploded verbally. And I feel like most of it stems from daycare and be around other kids who are talking. Bottom line is do what you think is best! Good luck!

  • Hes only.around family. DH is taking night classes so hes home with him while I work. And when oir schedules clash MIL watches him. Ive already made an appointment with the doctor, much to MILs dismay she does not agree with doctors and medicine and all that.

  • Maybe try getting him out to some programs in the area so he can have a bit more exposure to other kids. It could be really helpful. As for MIL, good news is she already got to raise her kid(s) how she wanted. Now you get to decide what's best for your family. Good luck at the appointment!

  • DD isn't very verbal either. Our pedi recommended an early intervention program. She has an appt next week. Even with being in daycare she wasn't speaking very much.

    Good luck!

  • There's a few things I've noticed different between parenting my now 8 year old and my 21 month old. One of them is the fact that people are worried about talking earlier. My ds didn't talk much until almost 2.5 and no one (meaning pedi, dc workers etc.) worried. I was always told that they would hit that "explosion" around 2, and it did.

I personally think they're still young right now to worry so if your pedi isn't concerned then I wouldn't be either.

  • Thank you ladies!! I already have an appt with his pedi but I really needed some input from other moms. I will def be asking about the early intervention program

  • Early intervention for sure, it can never hurt to have them evaluated, the eval is free and if it turns out that your LO is having trouble the earlier you get them into speech therapy or whatever, the better. My son was evaluated at 14 months and started speech therapy at 15 months. Because we got him in so early, we were able to pinpoint where we think the problem lies for him, and have been able to get him the services he needs. Trust your gut, and don't let anyone pressure you into the "wait and see" approach if you really feel that something is off. Good luck and feel free to message me.

7/5/11 MC at 8 weeks. 5/17/12 BFP, twins EDD 1/20/13! 6/20/12 Baby B's heart has stopped beating. 8/31/12 Baby A is a boy! And is perfectly healthy and thriving. 1/19/2013 emergency c-section, Thoren is perfect. 3/1/2013 told i will never be able to conceive again. 12/16/13 told they were wrong!

  • Like the PP said, I totally agree with Early intervention. My daughter is in it now and is doing great. We started around 18 months with her and they are able to work with her and help in case other things are causing her speech delay. Our speech theraphist seems to think my kid has a "sensory" issue, so we are now thinking about checking that out. I wouldn't worry to much, since every kid is different.

  • Yes, every child is different, and bilingual (while AMAZING!) can delay speech, it's not going to hurt to get an evaluation.  My niece isn't talking at all, and she's getting evaluated later this month.  I think the reason there is so much more emphasis on early intervention and concern about kids being verbal at younger ages has to do with the evidence that early intervention works, and the earlier the better.

On the multi-lingual part, I worked for a professor in my undergrad who was Austrian, her DH was American, and their kids went to a Spanish immersion DC and school.  Their kids didn't really speak until well after 2 years old, but when they started, they spoke German, English, and Spanish fluently and in the correct context.  It was so cool to see, but their busy little brains needed that extra time to sort it all out.
Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! June 22, 2012 - heard the heartbeat 9w1d 181 BPM!! 24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • That is incredibly helpful!!! I dont know anyone with bilingual children so I have no idea how delayed he would be. Im still going to talk to his ped and see what they say but im much less worried now
