Word retrieval issues

Is there any tips to help with this skill? Here's a very typical exchange between dd and I.
Dd realizes she wants peanut butter, comes to me and says "mommy, I want open please." I respond "dd what do you want me to open?" Dd opens her mouth but can't find the word. She directs me to the cabinet where the peanut butter is and points. I ask her what she wants and give her a few seconds to respond. She doesn't. I open the cupboard and say "oh, dd would like some peanut butter" modeling the appropriate sentence. She says yes please.

Am I doing this right? Is there more I should be doing? This is by far one of our biggest language struggles.

Re: Word retrieval issues

  • I have a meeting with her slp on Wednesday so I will definitely bring it up there. It does seem to be word retrieval though--another example is if she can't get the word she will bring me a prop to support what she's asking for like bringing me a shovel when she wants me to open her sandbox. She's always used stuff like that to communicate. When she was 11 months old during her first Christmas she would bring me the old milk jug under the tree to request a drink. She's always been a creative nonverbal communicator.

  • She asks for lots of things verbally. She has a very large vocabulary but can't use it to retell stories. She answers some wh questions (who/what). Makes choices verbally consistently. Noun retrieval seems to be the biggest issue. No pronoun reversal and uses adjectives.

  • I think I can relate to this somewhat. DS can't retell much of his day at school or daycare and he just started telling about one detail. DS is older but our therapists suggested not giving the item or the request until he says it.

DS would say "I want to watch" and I ask him what he wants to watch on tv. He then says it again "I want to watch." I tell him "I am not turning the tv on or I am not switching the tv to something else until he can say what he wants to watch." He will then say "dragons" and then I know he wants to watch "How to Train Your Dragon."
