All the time for allergies (almost daily) It does help the mucous, too. We use it for hives but when she has a cold, like now, it's doubly good! I hope he feels better. Get the dye free one if you haven't bought it yet - hate red stains all over when she drools straight after taking it!
We have for bug bites (extreme swelling & itching). Another time for poison ivy (Abby made a bouquet of flowers with it, doh!). My pedi warned that it could make them drowsy or wired.
It relieved the itching but it made both kids into wired, pissy messes. I haven't done it since. That was torture.
We did when isaac turned out to be allergic to penicillin. we used less than a half teaspoon. I like a little bit less than that because I'm paranoid. 5ml is a teaspoon and the regular dose for a six year old so I usually only give about 1.25ml. It's helped.
We have not used Benedryl for excessive mucous, but we use it at least once a month to treat food sensitivities/allergies (hives, swollen lips/tongue). It seems like she is starting to outgrow some reactions, though. She can finally eat apples, blueberries, strawberries, and pears! :-bd
