Cat Issues

I'll try not to make this too long. DH and I ended up with a cat 6 years ago, when we first moved in together. I rescued her as a baby (picture a tiny cat seperated too young from its mother and with a ton of fleas). Our plan was to find it a good home. We are not "cat people". I ended up falling in love with her and DH agreed to keep her.

Over the years we have had our fair share of fights over the cat. He has little attachment to her but I do. DH freaks out over cat like things that the cat does. If that makes any sense. Like getting on tables or chewing cords. She stopped doing any of that as she has aged (and was fixed).

However, this year she has peed on clothes or towels a couple times. The first few times I think she was feeling jealous. I have made an effort to not leave clothes laying around. DH does not. Anyways, this week she peed on his clothes. He was livid. And spirals into his usual "that's it she's going!" thing. Which gets me upset and I tell him "you don't get to decide all by yourself, to get rid of our family pet". Eventually he calms down and we move on. Later I discovered her litter box door was stuck and she couldnt get in. That to me is the obvious reason she peed on stuff. Well this morning he noticed a corner by our front door looked odd. He smelled it and sure enough she has been peeing there (I have mopped since the litter box door issue). I guess I'm looking for advice, opinions, strategies, any contributions really. I lied, this got long.

  • I'll try that @SunnySideUp26‌ ! I already have some puppy pads. It's worth a shot.

  • My sister has had problems with her two cats going outside the litter box, the will urinate on the basement carpet. No medical reason can be found, but they ended up using a bunch of carpet scraps as a way to protect their carpet. Sort of like the puppy pads. But for now it is working to at least save the carpet.

  • I second what PP said about changing the litter once a week and scooping daily. One of our cats will pee in corners or our bathroom rug if the litter boxes aren't clean.
Another tactic is placing a small litter pan in any problem areas (closets, corners) that she favors. Usually they will just go in the preferred spot in the litter box.

Other questions to ask are where is the litter box, what litter is being used, etc. Is the litter box in the Laundry room? If so, is there a chance she doesn't like to use the box while the loud machine is going? Was there a change if litter? Have you cleaned the entire box so no urine smell is left, or just put more litter over the old? Cats tend to like their litter boxes clean in a well lit area, but not in an area with too much traffic.

Cats can be very weird and develop picky habits, sometimes trouble shooting is the only way to figure out the root of the problem. Hope any of this helps, litter box issues are so so so hard to deal with, especially if your DH isn't exactly helping figure out the problem. Good luck, hope some of this helps!

  • Also, a vet visit to rule out any health issues is a great place to start!

  • Thanks everyone for your advice! It might also be the litter. We usually just buy whatever litter is cheapest and she never cared but maybe she does now, because I did just use another brand and I find it stronger smelling (arm and hammer).

If you went to a litter with odor, that sounds like it could very well be it. Cats definitely can be deterred by strong smelling litter

  • Lurking from TTCAL.

If you have only one litter box, try adding a new one.  You should always have one more litter box than you do cat.  Also, try using a litter box without a lid.  Maybe she doesn't being closed in.

I agree with PP that you should take her to the vet and rule out a uti.
