Deli meat?

Hi all, I know that we are to stay away from deli meats because of the temperature but here's my question. When I was at the dr for my 8wk apt, she said stay away from anything from the deli slicer - who knows what could be lingering around. So does cheese count? Like for grilled cheese and bacon egg and cheese?
I realize I could be totally going way overboard lol but better to be safe than sorry! :)

Re: Deli meat?

  • It's Listeria that can be found in deli meats; if it's in a meat and cut on a slicer that everything gets cut on, contamination can occur. As long as it's heated, you're fine.

  • I worked at a deli years ago & I feel completely safe buying meats and cheeses from there. The slicers are taken apart & sterilized multiple times a day & most delis have a slicer specifically for cheese.

  • My dr. Didn't seem concerned about lunch meat. She said they technically want you to heat it up but she's not concerned with it. I have very few things I can eat right now, especially meat wise, and lunch meat is one of them. With my rapid decline in weight I eat what I can.

  • I ate deli meat with my son and I'm eating it again. I asked the dr and she said a place like subway is safe because their stock is constantly being sold and replenished but a mom and pop deli where the meat is hanging from the ceiling is probably where you'll run into Listeria.
  • I eat it all and i'm alive and so is my almost 6 month old. I'm sure you'll be fine. Just take normal precautions to make sure your food is safe and you shouldn't worry.

  • I don't usually eat a lot of deli meat anyway, but if the occasion arises, I won't avoid it, especially if I know it's from a clean source and has been kept cold. It looks like, based on the research I've seen, most Listeria outbreaks are pretty random. The most common source is unpasteurized queso fresco (17% of cases).
  • You're way more likely to get listeria from fruits and veggies (like the cantelope and spinach within the last few years). I don't worry much about it and don't heat my meat

  • @Honeydewchestnut‌ the irony in what you said is amazing. I just had a whole wheat wrap I made at home with turkey and ham lunch meat, spinach, cheese, and Ceasar dressing. I also had a couple slices of cantaloupe. I am doomed lol. Sometimes I think I must be terrible. I know it should be just fricken fine but I never think of the "is it safe" until its already gone.
  • Look at it this way, listeria can make you seriously ill, have you ever got seriously ill from a turkey sandwich? This rule I believe is a little overboard, but I would suggest exercising caution from your source of lunch meat. If you look around and the deli isn't the neatest, avoid it, that goes for large chains too. I'm a food scientist by occupation and I had a sandwich for dinner last night, and I won't say listeria isn't a threat but so is getting struck by lightning.
  • NGL, I have been eating deli meat regularly since I got preg. My OB says that the threat of listeria is relatively remote. She is not concerned about it, so neither am I.

Would I eat deli meat from a sketchy looking deli? No. Would I have done that before I was preg? Nope.
