Naps

I'm in nap hell. LO barely naps anymore, 20-30 minutes naps throughout the day, his "long one" in the morning is like 40 mins. At daycare, despite the lack of naps they say he's happy, but at home the lack of sleep makes him fussy. He yawns and rubs his eyes but fights napping with all his might, no amount of rocking will get us more than 20 mins. He's sleeping well at night and will often wake up but put himself back to sleep, however he won't do the same during the day. Help!

  • I feel your pain.  D has been a terrible napper.  I started back to work this week and my sitter has been able to get him to sleep 2.5-3 hours for his second nap.  I was so pumped... until I put him down today and that nap lasted 30 minutes.  I just don't get it!

  • I'm not an expert, but from my experience with my first baby and this one, their naps do get shorter. This one takes 4-5 30 minute naps and sleeps from about 8-4 at night. Eventually they take fewer naps and maybe the length gets a little longer. But they aren't newborns anymore and they're not going to sleep like they did before.
  • LO will take 20-30 minute naps about three times a day. They seem to refresh him. Occasionally he'll take a longer nap in the afternoon, but only if he's been in the car seat or I nap with him. Maybe you could change up your routine when you get home from work? What does that time look like for you guys? Like instead of tummy time, try reading, etc,? You may have done this already so if so, please ignore me :)

  • Mine's been taking only 30 minute naps since she was a few weeks old but is a good night sleeper too. The only thing I did that made us all happier is going with the flow. I used to spend so much time trying to get her to nap & it just frustrated both of us. Now I just accept that she's only going to nap for 30 minutes about every 2 hours.
  • I would also trade in a good night sleep with poor naps. Mine naps great during the day but sleeps horrible at night which makes daycare happy but can make us miserable at work the next day. When she gets distracted during nap time and cant fall asleep, we usually wear her (if we are outside) or put her in the swing after calming her (for inside). Nap time is pretty much up to her. It's whenever she shows signs like yawning, starring aimlessly and rubbing her eyes. They say 4 month old babies shouldnt stay awake for more than 2 hrs but mine can definitely go on for 3-5 between naps.
  • Mine only naps 30 mins at a time every 2-3 hours. Sometimes I can get her to take a longer afternoon nap if it's on me. She refuses to nap at all after 3 even though she is tired. She's not sleeping great at night either. I don't think there is anything you can do about it OP. Just be thankful she sleeps at night :)
  • Mine is short naps, simibad sleeper thru the night. I've just accepted that I'm going to be tired.
  • Just out of curiosity OP, how are you timing the naps? I find DS naps better when I watch for his cues (thankful he has pretty obvious ones like rubbing his eyes and yawning). I used to put him down at certain times since that was the schedule he kind of set for himself, but he stopped napping well at those time. Lately I just start his "nap routine" the minute he rubs his eyes and he seems to go down for longer. Sometimes it's a really odd schedule, he'll go 45 minutes between naps one time and then 4 hours the next. But he seems to be in a better mood if I just let him lead the nap times.

  • I understand what you're going through. We are dealing with the same thing. DD (15 wks old) sleeps well at night. Goes down sometime between 7-8 and wakes up for the day around 5:30-6. She might wake up once or twice in the night for a snack but then falls back to sleep. Although past two nights she slept through (yippee!). We started daycare 2 weeks ago and her naps sucked. She would come home and be really cranky until bed. So I asked them to try to swaddle her for at least one of them so her naps could be longer. She's shown some improvement but not getting as much as she had been at home. She was very much a swing/car seat napper when she was home. Of course they need to lay her down in her crib at the center
  • My first 2 babies naturally fell into 2 hour naps 3 times a day. Then 2 times a day then down to once a day. This LO only takes cat naps all day! It's so hard to deal with. I lay her down and can only get one thing done and she's up and not in the best mood because I know she's still tired. If she's sleeping in the room that I am in and u notice her moving around I can stick the paci Back in her mouth and get her to fall back to sleep for a little longer but if she's in her crib she wakes about 15-20 min after I lay her down. It's so frustrating. My other kids slept through the night and took long naps. So I am greedy and I would like both not just one or the other. Ha! She sleeps about a 5-6 hour stretch at night then nurses and right back to sleep for 2. Then she starts the cat napping.
