What the hell do I do when this baby gets here- book suggestions?

I was wondering if anyone has any great book recommendations for this whole becoming a mom thing?

I've got the Mayo Clinic book for during pregnancy but I was reading over on the most recent breast feeding thread and I saw MrsRexManing‌ recommend The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and I suddenly realized I need to get cracking bc I have no idea what the hell to do in terms of breastfeeding or anything else when this baby actually gets here! Any favorite books for milestones? Feeding? Sleeping? Dealing with a cranky baby? Etc Any and all suggestions welcome!

Disclaimer: I hate to post redundant threads but haven't seen a book thread on this board, unless I missed it. I did a search for threads but I'm only mobile and for some reason nothing came up except wedding guest books on the knot, I'm sure there have been book threads before so any links to older threads are appreciated too!

  • I like Dr Sears books pretty well.

  • There is also a book on wonder weeks I think. It may be an app as well. I never felt DD really lined up with the wonder weeks but I know a lot of people thought it helped.
  • I didn't read it but I a lot of people like the Jenny McCarthy book Belly Laughs for a more humorous, stuff no one tells you about like of thing. :-)

  • Thank you for this thread. It's a little early in my opinion, but I'm taking down notes of book ideas for when I'm ready.
  • Dr Spock!

Remember Rugrats when they were always talking about Dr Lipschitz? Pretty much Spock, this guy has EVERYTHING. Baby cries all the time? This is why. Baby's (wild example of nervous mom question) poop is blue? He's got an answer. And he's not afraid to say "your baby might just have blue poop, every baby is different. If you feel better, go to the doctor, but your baby is very likely just a blue-poop baby"

  • I thought Baby 411 was helpful. If you want to read Happiest Baby on the Block, find the DVD instead! Most libraries probably have it. I thought it was way more helpful than the book!!

  • I like the Baby Whisperer Solves all your problems - for those who are into scheduling. Focuses on feeding and sleeping and dealing with your baby's "personality."

What to Expect the First Years is a basic resource that goes over milestones and questions for Y1 and I dipped into that a lot.

I liked the wonder weeks app - not practical or helpful for everyday stuff, just really interesting IMO.

Kellymom.com is a fantastic resource for breast feeding. Very well researched and easy to use. Very good for troubleshooting first step.

My "go to" for sleep training was Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child by Weissman and it is very reputable and excellent. Starts at 3 months. Used this in combination with the baby whisperer and had good success (especially if you don't want to cry it out).

    I have a lot of books - lol :)

  • This is great!! I'm making a list and heading to the library this week. It's going to take the next 5 months of reading to feel ready for this adventure lol.
  • My sister had a baby in April (we didn't plan it that way, april and april lol) and my mom helped her so much with that, I'm sure they will both be good sources of advice/knowledge.

FTM so I don't know out of personal experience... But one of the Bloggers I read regularly had an entry awhile back that I saved to check out later on. It's just a list of books that she found helpful from pregnancy through toddler age.

  • I like Dr Sears books pretty well.

Ditto Dr Sears' Baby Book--it's pretty comprehensive. My mom also gave me her old books from the 70s and I thought they were interesting. Kind of puts things in perspective that ideas are always changing and there is no one right answer.
  • I just started Bringing up Bebe which looks into French parenting and compares it to the behavior of children in the US.
  • Baby wise proved to be very useful for sleep training. Our DD slept through the night by 8 weeks with the help of this book. With any of these you have to modify the recommended actions to what fit you and your family but you can still follow the concept.

As PP's mentioned the Happiest Baby On the Block is also a good one. The DVD is interesting..... Kind of old school filming and the guy is a bit creepy but all in all it is effective!

Belly laughs was a good read as well. Quick read and funny moments throughout.
  • I love Happiest Baby on the Block and the Wonder Weeks app too. It's kind of eerie how well S's mood lined up with the app. If you are nursing I love The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. The Mayo Clinic also puts out a good book on baby's first year, but I forget the name.

Please, for the love of God, don't give Jenny McCarthy your money.
Once again I agree with @MrsRexManing‌. Alllllllll of this.

Except I will say that the first year book I read while I was pregnant and then never looked at again. Once baby is here you talk to your pedi and chat with other moms IRL and online about issues/experiences and get ideas of what to do and expect that way. At least that's how it worked for me.

Seriously though - HBOTB is a must. Learn and love the 5 s's. They saved us quite a few times with DS.

  • I'm reading Shi**y Mom. It's really more for laughs but it does put to rest a fear that I won't know what I'm doing. It's a common sense approach about child rearing. Mostly toddlers and real life situations. I figured I'd laugh before I really got into it.
