For those who had a slow leak

I know a few ladies on here have had their water break in a slow leak Instead of a big gush. How much was leaking when that happened? Twice today when I went to the bathroom my underwear have been wet in a small area. It almost is like I peed myself a little but I'm pretty sure it's not pee (unless I've lost all bladder control). I'm hoping it's just moisture but I am seriously side eyeing my underwear right now.

Re: For those who had a slow leak

  • Did you smell it? I've heard that amniotic fluid smells sweet, but when my water broke and I wasn't sure what it was, I cleaned it up and smelled it and thought it was scent-less.

    I was a gush-er, so I'm not much help. :P

  • @BreandMikewedding‌ @emerald27 I have been wondering the same thing. I've smelled it but either my nose doesn't work or it doesn't have a smell. I didn't have any labor symptoms until I was in labor with my son. This has been so weird.

  • When I asked my OB about this he said if it was a leak I'd feel it trickle down my leg. He's super old school though and doesn't worry about much so other people might be more cautious.

  • Lol. @FamousEa‌ & @erinchrisitne424‌ we are all delivering on the same day so maybe this is normal. It doesn't smell. I changed my underwear and haven't had anymore. Maybe it was just discharge.
  • How funny that we all have had a few similar concerns when we are all delivering the same day. @FamousEa and @BreandMikeWedding Maybe we are all just over anxious.

  • I keep wondering if it's fluid or discharge, too. The "sweet" gauge is so hard for me... I mean... I guess it has a sweet-ish smell to it... it doesn't smell sour. :-/

Mine has been so little (half-dollar size) that I've chalked it up to discharge, too. Others who leaked have described a more continuous leak than I believe I'm having.

Or nervous! I want to wait until my scheduled day so my mil can watch my kids. :-SS
  • Popping in from Setepmber. This exactly. I wasn't sure for a few days, and when I finally had it checked out, I was leaking water. Since we couldn't determine exactly when it happened ( because it was a leak and no obvipsy gush or pop), the hospital treated me like it had been broken for 24 hours which meant a bunch of antibiotics, and brief NICU visit for LO. I decided next time, when it doubt just get it checked out. The test is really quick, and it's not worth risking infection in case it was water.

  • @Ivorytower2‌ how much was leaking at a time? Was it a trickle?
  • Mine varied. The first few gushes were enough to wet my shorts in a small area.. Maybe the size of a softball? Then I was changing and assessing pretty frequently. The next few gushes were kind of in between with the smallest being maybe the size of a golf ball.

I didn't notice any smell at all but it was more mucousy than my usual discharge as it continued.

At first I also thought I just peed myself. It came out in like dollar size amounts at 3am, then when I woke up I thought I had "some leftover pee in my vag". Then at noon I would just be standing there and a small amount would leak out that I would feel it but I don't remember having to change my underwear (maybe i'm just gross ;-). Looking back it seems obvious now, but I was second guessing myself then because of the small amount (and because I was 33 weeks). Then at around 5pm I got out of the car from driving almost 2 hours and felt an unmistakable gush that soaked my underwear. Only at 9pm when I had anther gush one did I call the OB. Go figure I am an OB nurse too. I guess I was just in denial about my water breaking at 33 weeks.

ETA: Oh - and mine did not smell recognizably sweet until I was in the hospital for a few hours and it started coming out more regularly. But once that happened, it most definitely smelled sweet to me.

  • I had one small gush and then it 'stopped'. It just left small wet spots that I didn't really pay attention to. No trickling here. I only found out it was fluid until I asked the doctor and she tested it.

  • My water broke in the middle of the night and was small leaks. It was definitely pretty obvious though once it kept happening that it was my water. I got up to go pee and when I went to stand up fluid kept trickling out. At first I thought it was just more pee, however, as I got up and kept walking around it became clear that it was definitely my water breaking. I didn't notice any smell with it. It was mostly clear but did have some blood tinge to it occasionally. I would get a very small puddle or drips under me when it would leak and it would only come out when I was standing or sitting in certain positions.

  • Mine was more free flowing like I was peeing myself but it was clear and it didn't really smell IMO. When I got to L&D they tested what was coming out and it was negative but it was clearly my water! My underwear tested positive but the water coming out didnt. Huh??

Mine also tested negative. It was so weird. They did 2 tests that were both negative when it was very obvious it was my water. It wasn't until the on call OB came in and did a vaginal exam that it all came pouring out and they admitted me.

  • This is super confusing! My water didn't break with my first two so I have no point of reference. I don't think it is a leak at this point. It only happened twice yesterday and was pretty small and nothing since. Perhaps my h was looking extra sexy to me yesterday. Or perhaps I've turned into a 90 year old woman and have no bladder control.
  • Pee. Change your underwear and put on a pad, lie down for a good half hour plus and then stand up. If you have another small trickle, it is likely fluid and not urine. Amniotic fluid is clear and/or pinkish, usually.
  • My false alarm Assessment visit last week was because of this. I had a very small trickle of watery, clear fluid that had a burnt or smoky smell. It was not sweet and definitely not like urine. I monitored for a little over an hour. It kept coming in little drops. Initial paper test and Amnisure test came back negative. Doctor thinks it was either regular discharge or liquefied mucous plug. Neither explains the smell though.

However, like PPs said, better safe than sorry. The tests are quick. Good luck.

  • I would say more than a trickle. I went bottomless for a few hours and it was more noticeable at that point, although not leaking on the ground or anything. It sort of reminded me of ovulation discharge and I didn't notice any specific smell. I was really shocked when they confirmed it was my water. Good luck hun!
