Measuring big - freaking out - advice/help please!

Hi Guys, ok need some advice. When I went for my 20 week scan, all was in order, now I'm 29 +3 and my ultrasound said I was measuring at 32 weeks! I'm not obese or have GD, but this baby is big! Does anyone else have any experience being so far over? Do the doctors induce you if you hit say 38 weeks (and the baby would therefore be 41 weeks in size) I just don't want to go all the way to the 40 week Mark if this baby will be so big! It's freaking me out! Anyone have any words of wisdom?

  • Talk to your OB about it!
This. If you're truly concerned and have questions - go in for an appt. and talk to your OB. They know best. They will have a plan for you. One that ensures they are putting the health of you and your baby first.

Which is very common. I've observed it in every DDC I've been on. Usually big baby concerns spring about toward the end when some, or many, are
looking for a reason to be induced. Because at that point many simply want to be "done," and if many doctors routinely induce for bogus reasons such as a projected 9-9.5 lb baby, well, there are going to be takers. A lot of moms will and do take the offer, and if said doctor is offering it then it must be sound medical practice.

I'm expecting to see a bunch of growth scan/"baby coming early" posts in the coming weeks.

  • I used the examples of GD and obesity as they are what are given for examples for big babies. If I was either of those I would be more relaxed, it wasn't meant as an insult to anyone, it was more that there is no obvious reason for the baby being big. I am a FTM and didn't expect the come back I got. I haven't done this before ladies, I'm new and scared. I am planning on asking my OB, I could only get an appointment next Thursday. Thank you to those who were understanding x

I will never understand why the hell people decided that asking random internet strangers these kinds of questions is better than asking the person who went to school for years to learn this shit!!! Get the hell off forums and call your doctor if your that fucking concerned!

  • No, that's not what I said, seriously, why is asking for advice seen as an attack on everyone else. I have just read that obesity MAY lead to a bigger baby. Sorry for annoying whomever I annoyed. As I said I'm just trying to figure this whole thing out and thought that a forum full of women who have babies already may be able to shed some light. Nevermind.

And see, those of us that are either or both would probably be more worried if we were measuring big and would be potentially put under even more monitoring. Trust me. Those of us with higher-risk pregnancies (for whatever reason) are WELL aware of the risks and potential complications to ourselves and our babies.

  • OP, while there are indeed risks associated with maternal obesity. There's a higher risk for having macrosomic babies, insulin resistance and other conditions, not all obese women will fit in these statistical groups.

I was obese during my other four pregnancies, but I did not have insulin resistance. My term babies were bigger than average for their gestation, but it wasn't due to impaired glucose tolerance, which is simply more common in the obese population. I barely gained weight, actually lost a good bit of weight, but I *did* eat a diet high in protein, and genetics play a factor as well.

  • Agree with previous posters. And these are all questions that you should ask your doctor, he/she is the only one who can actually answer them.
  • @knight1983‌ it wasn't annoying, it is very insulting.
Me: obese=yes, GD = been type two for years now.
Dd#1 (now 10)= diagnosed with GD was induced @ 34 weeks due to pre-e she was 4lbs 3 oz
Dd#2 (now 6)= obese full blown diabetes 2. Two days before her birth at 34 weeks and some days high risk doctor said she was 9lbs at 34 weeks! My regular ob scan said 7 lbs. for 34 weeks. My water broke right at 35 weeks she came weighting 9lbs 13 oz. I would have been looking at 12 lbs at 40 weeks, and I would have done anything to carry her longer. (She was rushed to a children's hospital in another state). Was I miserable yes, was I in pain yes, but I would go through it again to carry her to term, so no a big baby is no reason to induce.
Ds#1 (carrying now): weighing at 2lbs 11 oz at 28 weeks in 44%. My dream of carrying to term never going to happen RCS is scheduled already at 38 weeks if I don't go before hand.
I have to have two ultrasounds a week now, been going once a week since 20 weeks for this little guy. I am on 5 shots a day of insulin and fixing to go to 6 for my LO, that burns so very much going in. So before you go OMG my baby is a little big (but I am perfect with no GD and not obese), can I induce? Think about someone other than you for a second and think about what these ladies are going through that you are insulting. Be thankful your LO isn't growth restricted and a little large (it'll help with controlling body temp.)

  • So, I'm not trying to piss anyone off with this. But I noticed a few people had asked where there was proof that obesity or GD could have any effect on the size of baby at birth. This has been book marked in my "reading list" because my LC sent it to me when I was talking to her about my daughter's sleeping habits and breast feeding. That had nothing to do with what the bulk of the article was about but she sent it to me because I was asking about sleep issues in infants and what the side effects could be.
    https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/obesity-causes/prenatal-postnatal-obesity/

Anyway, I remembered I had it when this topic came up and people started getting upset. It goes without saying that this isn't ALWAYS true, but there are some links that can be found between a higher birth weight baby and a mother having GD or being obese. That in no way means that every woman that fits these two criteria are going to have huge babies, nor does it imply that underweight, or normal weight mom's won't have huge babies.

NO! I'm not WKing here. I just knew I had an article that touched on this subject and since a few were asking OP to back up her statement,...and she wasn't,....I thought I'd share.

BTW - my mom was very tiny, 100 lbs when she had my brother and he was 10.5 lbs. My aunt is, by medial definition, morbidly obese and her 3 kids were right around 7lbs each. Obviously maternal weight doesn't always dictate birth weight.

I see how the way she said "I'm not obese and don't have GD" can be insulting, but she was probably just ruling out questions we may have asked her.

    That's kinda what I was thinking. :)

  • I was initially small before pregnancy, my doctor had the "you have gained too much weight" talk with me at my 27 week appointment. My a/s at 18 weeks I measured 5 days ahead, my fundal last time I was measuring larger than normal according to my OB. I also passed my 3 hour glucose test so that is ruled out. Although my husband was a 9 lb 4 oz baby and his brother was 11 lbs. So there is genetics. I am anticipating a growth scan in my near future. I can be quoted in a post I did 10 weeks ago that I have no desire pushing out a 9 lb baby(I really am scared shitless of this), but if my baby is healthy and that's how long it takes so be it. OP your intentions may have been to answer questions that may come up, but it was a very insensitive way to do it. All women are different, all babies are different. This is why doctors are the best to get answers from, not an internet stranger that may have a similar experience but a vastly different reasoning/outcome.
